Lassie is a 2001 manga that spanned 2 volumes. Yoshihiro Takahashi released Lassie a little bit after releasing the first few volumes of Ginga Densetsu Weed. Lassie has not been published in America.

Plot

Lassie is focused around a Collie (Lassie) who is trying to find a young woman. Lassie spent a lot of her life in a pet shop, where a young woman named Akutsu worked. Akutsu, though warned by her boss that she shouldn't name the pets because they would eventually be sold, gave Lassie the name "Lassie" because he was a Rough Collie, as was the popular TV and book character, Lassie. The two soon had a large bond. After being separated, Lassie is on a quest to find Akutsu, and makes some friends on the way.

Dogs

Lassie is a good-natured male Rough Collie who is on a quest to find a young woman, Akutsu, who had promised him that one day she would buy him. He carries around a locket which was given to him by Akutsu. At the start of the series, he is seen running away from a pack of dogs, lead by a leader by the name of Bull. A German Shepherd, German, saves him and the two become friends. At the end of the series, Lassie is reunited with Akutsu.

German is a male German Shepherd Dog who helps Lassie at the beginning of the book. Germaine doesn't trust humans because of a bad past experience in which a human breeder locked him away in a shed with many other dogs, and he was the only one who escaped and didn't die. Later, he is saved by Lassie who helps him regain his trust in humans, by bringing a young boy to help Germaine since he is injured and unable to walk. German is last seen when he is wishing Lassie a farewell and it can be infered that he went on to live with the boy who helped him, Shingo Yaguchi.

Bull is a male American Pit Bull Terrier and is the main villian. Bull was first seen trying to catch Lassie at the beginning of the book. Bull is hot-headed, and at one point attacks some adults and children (along with his pack) at a school. Bull escapes, and Lassie later comes to him to warn him that the humans were after him. Despite this, Bull tried to attack Lassie. Bull was then caught by the dog-catchers, and last seen being driven away in a van, probably to be put to sleep.

Chiyomaru is a 7 years old male Shiba Inu mix who was once a stray, and taken in by a kind woman named Masumi. Chiyomaru helped form a bond between Masumi and a man named Sanosuke. The two started an Italian restaurant, but Sanosuke eventually left most of the work to Masumi and cheated on her. Masumi refused to stop working, and this led to her death. Sanosuke realized how horrible his acts were, and got married again to a arrogant woman named Machiko (the woman who Sanosuke was cheating on), who owned a Toy Poodle named Pamella. Machiko was going through Masumi's belongings one day, and gave a piece of clothing to her Poodle to chew on. Chiyomaru, who had endured Machiko and the Poodle couldn't stand it any longer and bit Pamella because of this. Because of the bite, Machiko beat up Chiyomaru and dumped him far away and didn't tell Sanosuke. Sanosuke thought Chiyomaru was lost, and began trying to find him. Lassie helps Chiyomaru find his owner, and together they show that Machiko was cheating on Sanosuke. Sanosuke then leaves Machiko, and travels away to start a new restaurant with Chiyomaru.

Pamella is a female Toy Poodle owned by Machiko, and is given a piece of clothing of Masumi's to chew on. Machiko spoils her and loves her dearly, so when Chiyomaru bit Pamella, Machiko beat up Chiyomaru.
