Diane Salma

Diane Salema was born on July 20, 1983 at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. Of Portuguese descent and a Toronto girl through and through, Salema has lived in the city her whole life.

MTV Career

Salema’s opportunity to audition for a host position on MTV sounds like a scene from a Hollywood movie. While working at HMV, two women seeking her help were so impressed with her that they came back to ask Salema if she’d audition for a job at MTV. Although skeptical at first, she soon came around and auditioned for the opportunity of a lifetime.

Since joining the MTV team, Salema contributes to the network’s flagship program, “MTV Live” via quirky segments including Smashdown, a 90-second recap of the drama unfolding on hit MTV shows. When she’s not working on segments for “MTV Live,” she can be seen regularly in Quick Chats between programs and during commercial breaks. In these segments, Salema and fellow MTV hosts interact with viewers across Canada and dish about the programming each day.

When she’s not busy at work, Salema’s favourite pastimes include playing video games, walking, playing the guitar and reading. She believes her strongest influences are her friends, family, and music – of course!

The former lead singer of heavy metal band A Walk Down Memory Lane, who is just getting over her fear of the dark, says the best day of her life was playing her first show at the Poor Alex Theatre, “it really was a dream come true.”

This self-described environmentalist also takes a keen interest in philanthropic initiatives that benefit victims of violence and HIV/AIDS. In fact, Salema has participated in the AIDS Walk for Life for the last 10 years and makes no plans to stop anytime soon.

When reflecting on how MTV has changed her life, Salema says, “I’ve met some people that I’ve always dreamed of meeting. If someone told me when I was a kid that I’d be able to hang out with some of my musical idols one day, I would’ve freaked out and not believed them.”
