"Forever Charmed"

Forever Charmed is the final episode of the series Charmed. It was originally aired on May 21st, 2006.

Synopsis

Piper and Leo go to Phoebe’s apartment where the Book of Shadows is. While she looks for some kind of solution, Billie returns to Magic School and confronts Dumain, revealing Christy is dead. Dumain suggests she project herself back into the past and save Christy.

Piper and Leo arrive at Victor’s and Piper breaks the news. Victor reveals he knows about Coop and Piper realizes he can help them. She summons Coop and asks to borrow his ring so she can go back in time. Coop agrees, but warns it doesn’t always work as desired. Leo goes with her and they go into the past, in 1975, where they meet a young Victor and Patty in bed, when Piper was 3 and Phoebe hasn’t been born yet. Later, they try to explain things, without giving away too much, and finally reveal Paige and Phoebe are dead and that they’re the Charmed Ones. Patty suggests they use their family magic to get Piper to where she needs to go. The three of them take the ring and go to Grams, but end up in a future where Piper and Leo are old and have been waiting for them.

The old Piper and Leo reveal it’s 50 years in the future and that Piper needs to focus on who she wants to get to with her heart, not her head, and they must work together to get rid of the Hollow. They try again and see Grams talking with a young Piper. After young Piper leaves, they introduce themselves and Grams faints. Piper reveals that Patty is dead at that time.

Dumain walks Billie through the process for her to travel back into the past. When he mentions she has to focus on the Triad, she suspects something is up and finally realizes she’s been manipulated. Dumain tells her go back and ask Christy, so she’ll understand.

While Patty tries to wake Grams, Leo points out that he could be taken away again. Grams wakes up, Piper makes introductions and tells her she must help save the Charmed Ones. Billie projects herself back into the past at the Manor, just as the past Billie and Christy arrive. She warns them, but past-Billie sends present-Billie flying and goes on to fight. The battle starts to play out as before, but then Piper, Grams, and Patty arrive to cast a spell which drives the Hollow out of all of them prematurely. The present-Billie and Piper merge with themselves in the past, and then Billie and Christy teleport out.

The Angel Of Destiny who brought Leo arrives to take him back again. Piper explains everything, but notes they’re back where they started. Then, the future Wyatt and Chris appear, to reveal someone has screwed up their future. Billie and Christy are walking and Christy doesn’t believe they’re being used and goes off on her own.

Chris and Wyatt explain that Wyatt lost his powers in the middle of a demon fight and cast a spell that brought them back to the present. Piper figures out Billie and Christy stole Wyatt’s power using the Hollow. Coop arrives and Wyatt recognizes him as “Uncle Coop,” and then Chris and Wyatt take Patty to see Victor. Victor is confused and finally Patty finds out they’re separated.

Christy tells Dumain that Billie has abandoned them, but there’s a way to revive the Triad without her. Grams is working on a potion, when Henry arrives to talk to Paige. Coop insists on confessing his love to Phoebe, but Phoebe can’t handle it and goes to talk to her sisters after giving him the ring back. Dumain teleports in to grab Coop and the ring, while Billie shows up and asks to talk to them.

They hear her out and she explains about the Triad, and future-Chris and Wyatt show up and reveal that Dumain is involved. Phoebe calls for Coop, who can’t respond, and Chris and Wyatt reveal that Coop was sent so Phoebe could fall in love with him, and it wasn’t a forbidden love. They explain that in the future they’re as one and all she has to do is think about him to summon him. She does so and he appears, in great pain. He reveals Dumain took his ring and they plan to go back in time.

Dumain is talking with the Triad in the past, when Dumain and Christy arrive, but the Charmed Ones and Billie arrive as well and destroy the Triad, then both Dumains. The Halliwells explain that Billie sent them back, and Paige takes the ring. Christy accuses Billie of betraying her and she throws a huge fireball. Billie deflects it back and destroys her.

All the Halliwells are reunited at the Manor and Wyatt has his powers back. They reveal Billie has gone her own way. The Angel of Destiny arrives with Leo and reveals that’s how the battle was supposed to end, and it’s all worked out. Victor and Patty arrive with the children and Coop reveals he can take everyone back and Chris says if they arrive just before they left, they won’t remember what they’ve learned. A family reunion takes place in the sun room of the Halliwell manor, with the young Wyatt and Chris (played by Combs' son, Finley Donoho), the two boys as young men, Victor Bennet, Grams and Patty.

Later, Piper comes down and says they should write everything down in the Book of Shadows. Each writes down what they’ve experienced and we see what will happen in the future. Coop and Phoebe marry and have three daughters, and Phoebe publishes a best-selling book. Billie is shown babysitting two of Phoebe's children. Henry continues to look after his parolees and has a son (Henry Jr.) and twin daughters with Paige, who continues to help the next generation of witches. Piper and Leo have a third child, a daughter, the assumed foreseen girl, Melinda (seen in the last minutes of the show). She opens a restaurant and Leo goes back to teaching at magic school, until his retirement. It ends with an elderly Piper reading their saga to her granddaughter, then going upstairs with an elderly Leo past the pictures of all their family, past and present, on the walls. The other grandchildren come into the manor and Piper's granddaughter uses her powers to swing the doors closed one final time, thus showing she has inherited Prue's powers of telekinesis, as she uses the same hand motion as Prue and the familiar chime sound is heard for the last time.

Artifacts

  • The Hollow: An ancient vapor and the most powerful force of unknown origin which absorbs all forms of magic it comes in contact with, whether it be good or evil. It appears in a swarm of vapor-like particles floating in mid-air, but can also reside inside a living being, thus possessing their corporeal form. It is eternal and cannot be destroyed by any known means, rather it can only be contained when powerful representatives from both sides of good and evil join forces. It actually possesses no mind or personality but rather acts like a virus, mindlessly consuming all magic it touches, thus was always referred to as the "void" by the Seer and the Avatars. It is kept in an ancient burial ground as a pact agreed upon by both sides and is heavily guarded by powerful beings. It has been said that this is the "ultimate power" that will be the end of good and evil, thus creating a void as a reality.

Trivia

  • Of the previous main characters in the show, Prue Halliwell, Cole Turner and Darryl Morris did not appear in the episode. As executive producer Brad Kern explained, Darryl could not be fitted into the plot, while bringing back Prue would have centered the episode on her instead of the main cast.[1] While acknowledging criticism for not using photographs of Shannen Doherty in the episode, Kern pointed out a Screen Actors Guild rule that the use of an actor's photograph in a television episode in which the actor does not appear still entitles the actor to a full episodic fee, thus showing one photograph of Doherty would have resulted in one of the returning previous main characters not being able to be afforded.[2]
  • The Angel of Destiny, upon seeing the deaths of Phoebe and Paige, said it was not how she foresaw the final battle ending. In this episode, she explains this was her design all along. This represents a predestination paradox.
  • This is the second and last time on the show where we see Patty use her power. The first time was in P3 H2O.
  • Piper travels back to the same year that the 1999 version of herself did in the episode "That '70s Episode". She arrives at the moment of Phoebe's conception, mere weeks before the Piper of 1999 would arrive, meaning Victor and Patty break up during those few weeks between both her arrivals, getting back together because of Patty's pregnancy for Christmas as seen in "Thank You for Not Morphing", but separating again when Patty discovers she is pregnant with Paige.
  • The Charmed Ones fulfill their new destiny of bringing forth a new generation of good magic, when the three sisters each deliver 3 children and many grandchildren after them. This was the new destiny bestowed upon them by a male Angel of Destiny after the sisters defeated the Source of All Evil near the end of season 4, which was their original destiny.
  • The episode marks Phoebe's third marriage. Her first husband was Cole, her second marriage was to Dex, and now she has wed Coop.
  • The final shot of the show (the camera panning away from the manor) is actually recycled from the fourth season finale "Witch Way Now?." However, the CG Angel of Destiny has been removed and the shot's lighting has been edited. Due to extensive budget cuts the crew had to film everything in studio, making an exterior shot impossible.
  • Piper was the first Charmed One to be shown in Something Wicca This Way Comes and last one to be shown in this episode.
  • Our first look into an exterior in Something Wicca This Way Comes was the Halliwell Manor, and our last look into an exterior was the Manor again.
  • In the episode of Something Wicca This Way Comes we see a picture of the Charmed Ones with Prue together, and in this episode we see again a picture of the Charmed Ones, but with Paige instead of Prue, exactly in the same position between Piper and Phoebe.
  • Holly and Alyssa are the only two actors to appear in every aired episode of Charmed. However, Alyssa Milano did not portray Phoebe in the unaired pilot in 1998, instead Lori Rom played the role. This means that Holly Marie Combs is the only actor to appear in every aired and unaired episode of Charmed.
  • Both Penny (Grams) and Patty seem unsurprised that their future great grandchild and grandchild (respectively) are males despite the fact that Grams was initially upset that Piper had a male child (Wyatt) stating that the family only produced girls.
  • As seen late in the episode, Phoebe was the only sister (of her, Piper and Paige) not to be married in the Manor. She married Cole in a mausoleum, Dex in Lake Tahoe and Coop at Magic School. Prue was also married to a demon in the underworld, though against her own will.
  • The end of the first episode shows Prue using her telekinesis to close the door. The end of the last episode shows Piper's granddaughter using her telekinesis to shut the door, using the same motion and sound effects as Prue. Also, it was confirmed by Brad Kern in December 2006's Charmed Magazine that the grandchild seen closing the door with telekinesis was named 'Prudence' as a "final nod to Prue".
  • In the future, Paige is seen with glasses. In the episode of season seven Charrrmed! old Paige says she needs glasses.
  • In All Halliwell's Eve Phoebe saw that her true love's initial was 'C'. Back then she thought it was Cole but she finally ends up with Coop, whose name also begins with a C. It's revealed in Feats of Clay that Phoebe had a long relationship in New York (prior to the events of the pilot) with Clay.
  • Paige is the only sister shown to be still fighting demons in the future.
  • Elderly Piper and Leo are shown playing scrabble in the future and Piper incorrectly spells Zankou's name as "Xankou".
  • Elderly Leo previously appeared in The Jung and the Restless.
  • When 70s Patty arrives at Victor's apartment, she says "How do I look?". Finola Hughes hosts a TV show called "How Do I Look?".
  • Phoebe is the only one of the sisters to have all girls as children, which is foreseen by Melinda Warren in the episode The Witch Is Back. Piper has two boys and a girl and Paige has a boy and twin girls. This could mean that it's possible that her daughters are the Charmed Ones that Melinda Warren foresaw.
  • From the flashforward at the end of the episode, Henry and Paige's son is called Henry, Jr. No names are given for Phoebe's children or Paige's twin girls. However, from the Charmed episodes, we could imply that Phoebe was possibly going to name one of her daughters Prudence, with the nickname Ladybug.
  • When Piper, Patty and Leo first meet Grams in this episode, Grams is giving younger Piper the "witch talk" (mentioned in Cheaper by the Coven).
  • We see that Piper and Leo have three children; Wyatt, Chris and Melinda. But the pictures on the wall show only Wyatt and Chris, even them on older age. There's no Melinda in any of the pictures.
  • Piper seems surprised when she saw the future Leo asking how to spell Zankou's name. But she's already seen the future Leo in The Jung and the Restless. Alhough, it could be the fact that she was in a dream-state when she first saw the future Leo.
  • Billie attacked her future self the same way Piper uses her powers and again on the fireball at Christy. The sound effect is the same one used for Prue's telekinesis.
  • Everyone was already looking up at an angle even before the Angel of Destiny flew past the sisters.
  • This episode is tied with Black as Cole and Sleuthing with the Enemy for the second highest rated episode in the series.
  • In the episode Charmed and Dangerous, it is revealed that in order to contain The Hollow, a significant source of evil and good have to recite the containment spell in unison. However, Piper, Penny, and Patty are able to contain The Hollow without help from an evil being.
  • With a 9.4 rating on TV.com this the fourth highest rated episode of the series, tied with Sleuthing with the Enemy and Black as Cole, and behind Charmed and Dangerous, Brain Drain, and All Hell Breaks Loose, all in a three way tie for first with scores of 9.6
