Wrong Turn 2 (a.k.a. Wrong Turn 2: Dead End) is a 2007 horror film which stars Erica Leerhsen, Henry Rollins and Texas Battle. It is a sequel to the 2003 horror film Wrong Turn which starred Desmond Harrington and Eliza Dushku, and has been available on DVD since October 9, 2007.[1]

Plot

Taking place shortly after the events of the original Wrong Turn, a group of six contestants are thrown together for six days in a simulated post-apocalyptic wasteland due to their participation in a reality television show called The Ultimate Survivalist: The Apocalypse, hosted and produced by a retired military commander Dale Murphy (Henry Rollins), in which the winner will walk away with $100,000. Located in a remote part of West Virginia, the contestants soon discover that what they really are fighting for is their survival — against a family of hideously deformed inbred cannibals who plan to ruthlessly butcher them all.

Cast

Production

Wrong Turn 2 began filming on May 29 2006, and finished on June 30, 2006 in Vancouver, Canada. A one-minute Teaser Trailer was shown on Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors in Chicago on February 25 [2], and released on-line on March 02, while the second Teaser Trailer, this time edited by the director himself, was shown at the WizardWorld convention in Los Angeles on March 18, and released on-line on April 02, exactly one month after the first teaser premiered on the Internet.[3] In addition do that, the first couple of film stills were released exclusively to Fangoria, Dread Central and Bloody-Disgusting, quickly followed by the release of the official Cover Art, DVD details and specs. A month later it was announced that the film got accepted at London's FrighFest and Austin's Fantastic Fest, and was eventually premiered on August 25 in UK, and September 21, 2007 in USA.
Fox Home Entertainment released the film on DVD on October 9, 2007 in an Unrated version with extras that include a commentary by director Joe Lynch and actors Erica Leerhsen & Henry Rollins, a second commentary by writers Turi Meyer and Al Septien, “More Blood, More Guts: The Making of Wrong Turn 2: Dead End” featurette, a “Making Gore Look Good” featurette, an “On Location With P-Nut” featurette (which features new original music from 311 bassist P-Nut), 2 Easter Eggs, and the trailer.

Reception and Box Office

Wrong Turn 2: Dead End received mostly positive reviews, gaining a 71% fresh rating from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes [4], and a weighted average of 5.6 on IMDb [5]. Uncle Creepy of DreadCentral gave the film 8 out of 10 stars stating that the film "is a hot ticket for some gore-soaked backwoods mayhem that gets even better with repeated viewings and lots of booze" [6]. Bloody-Disgusting stated as well that "what could have been a cheap and lazy cash-in turned out to be one of the year’s better genre offerings" [7].
The film has been a success on the DVD with a debut at #9 on the Billboard Top DVD Sales, and a gross of more than $6 Million on DVD Rentals (as of 11/18/07), already covering its budget of $4 Million.

Trivia

  • The original script involved the two surviving characters of the first movie returning. This idea was later scrapped when they decided to make a direct-to-video sequel entry.[8]
  • Henry Rollins was the first official cast member announced.[9]
  • The film was shot in only 25 days.[10]
  • Even though the film was originally going straight-to-video, FOX was very impressed with its quality that they actually considered putting it theatrical at one point, but soon gave up because of the recent bombing of R-Rated horror films at the Box Office.
  • Director Joe Lynch originally wanted to have more inbred characters in the film, but was unable to because there were already too many characters to service in the film.[11]
  • Erica Leerhsen did a lot of her own stunts in the movie.
  • Director Joe Lynch edited his own teaser trailer in March of 2007 with music from composer Bear McCreary and released it exclusively to DreadCentral.com after being disappointed with the first teaser FOX released a month before.[12]
  • Texas Battle and Crystal Lowe both had supporting roles in the 2006 Horror Sequel, Final Destination 3, before appearing in Wrong Turn 2.
  • Daniella Alonso played the role of a military woman attacked by a group of cannibals once again in FOX's 2007 Horror Sequel, The Hills Have Eyes 2.
  • The tagline, "In the Forest, Only They Can Hear You Scream", is a direct reference to the tagline used for Alien, which was "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream".
  • The character of M/Michael wears a t-shirt with the logo from the film version of Battle Royale, a movie with a similar premise.
