Aska Yang

Aska Yang (simplified Chinese: 杨宗纬; traditional Chinese: 楊宗緯; Hanyu Pinyin: Yáng Zōng Wěi; Tongyong Pinyin: Yáng Zong Wěi; Wade–Giles: Yang Tsung Wei), born on April 4, 1978, a popular Taiwan Singer and a member of Million Star Gang (星光幫).

During his college education at the National Taiwan University of Education (NCUE), Aska attended numerous singing competitions in or out of the campus and won several championships. Year 2007 Aska attended a contest in One Million Star (超級星光大道), a popular televised singing competition in Taiwan. Aska was an early favorite to run away with the competition. His powerful and soul touching voice attracted millions of music lovers and he was won as the "Most Popular Person" by an SMS voting survey. However, he withdrew from the show after admitting on air that he had forged his National ID Card photocopy and cut 5 years off his age to enter one million star.[1]

Aska’s superb popularity kept him on top of the Internet Search list and related Internet websites. He was rated Number One for 7 consecutive weeks on the Yahoo!Taiwan Most Famous Person’s rating, with a huge gap from the second place. The Yahoo!Taiwan Aska 10 Thousand Fans Club reached a membership of over 30,000 people within 3 months since it startup on March 4, 2007. Aska’s blog reached 3 million visitor hits within 2 months. Aska Yang broke the record of front page appearance on Apple Daily, a popular newspaper in Taiwan with a paparazzi flavor.

Aska Yang is listed in "Taiwan Who is Who 2007-2008" and he is also the second place of Yahoo!Taiwan Person of the Year 2007.[2]

News and Events

Age Incident

Aska Yang once attended National Defense University majoring in law, but he was expelled from the university after the junior year. Following completion of the mandatory military service, he took the college entrance exam and was accepted into the Law Department of National Taiwan University. He studied one semester there and decided to leave due to lack of interest in the subject. He then transferred to National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) as a freshman with guidance and counseling major, and graduated in 2007. During his study at NCUE, Yang tried to avoid people’s inquiry about his past by subtracting 5 years from his real age.

While competing in the singing contest One Million Star (超級星光大道), Yang populated his birth date as April 4, 1983 on his blog. After his continuous outstanding performances in the competition, the Internet forum discussion on his real age became heated, and the news media started to pay attention to this matter and reported it. Questioned and pressed by the media, the show production presented Yang's forged ID card photocopy to the media, and insisted Yang was born in 1983 as stated in his blog. [3] The media soon discovered the portrait of a person with the same name as Yang from the 1996 senior yearbook of Yang's alma mater Chungli High School. They finally tracked down Yang's family, interviewed his father, and confirmed Yang’s real age[4].

After the news media exposed his family member and reported his age, Yang expressed his intention of quitting the competition. The show producers attempted to retain Yang but failed. In the evening of June 6, 2007, the show held a press conference[5], claimed that there was no age constraint for the contestants, and at the same time encouraged Yang to speak up and give an explanation about his age to the public[6]. During the taping of the show on June 10, Aska Yang acknowledged publicly his actual birth year was 1978 in front of the news media, apologized on the scene to the public, and withdrew from the competition to take responsibility for hiding his real age. [7] He also admitted ID card photocopy forgery was his own act, and he did it to cover up the mistake he made on his age previously[8]. Because the forgery of ID card photography belongs to the "non-on told is a crime" category, Taipei District Prosecutors Office immediately approached the show to collect evidence and summoned Yang.[9]

On June 16, after an open investigation, the prosecutor considered Yang a minor offender who showed deep regret on his misconduct. The case was completed immediately after investigation with the "ease of prosecution" and the punishment of submitting a 500 words written confession as well as a 60 hour community service[10].

Contract Dispute

On September 4, 2007, his agent An-chin Hsu (許安進) delegated his attorney to petition the Taipei District Court for temporary provisional disposition against Aska Yang, which forbade Aska Yang to participate in any public performance unless getting Hsu’s agreement in writing[11]. On September 11, the petition was denied by the Taipei District Court due to the defect in the legal proceedings because the petition didn’t specify the intended time limit and the date of commencement.

Hsu turned to lodge the appeal to The Higher Court, attempting to distrain Aska Yang’s properties and make a legal claim for compensation of 50 million NT dollars[12]. The court sat on Oct. 11 but both parties didn’t appear in court. They respectively delegated their attorneys to express their good intention of out-of-court settlement toward the judge and pleaded for the extension of the court in order to have more time for mutual consultation. The judge granted their request and decided the court would reassemble at the end of the month.

Due to the contract in dispute, Hsu didn’t arrange any more performance opportunities for Aska Yang. Aska Yang also stated his refusal to work unless all contractual disagreements were settled. The relationship between both sides came to a deadlock. In this situation, Aska Yang nearly disappeared from the show business. He could only appear in the activities for public welfare and the compulsory labor service brought in a previous deferred indictment on a charge of forged document. However, Aska Yang never gave up his dream as a singer and still hoped he could release his personal album soon after resolving the contract dispute with Hsu[13].

On October 22, 2007, mediated by Taipei’s Women Rescue Foundation (TWRF) (婦女救援基金會), the attorneys of both sides achieved consensus on most of the new contract clauses. On November 5, 2007, in the presence of Lian Kuo, Dean of Student Affairs of National Changhua University of Education, and Yulan Yeh, TWRF Chairman, Aska Yang entered into a new contract with An-chin Hsu[14].

Most Current

On November 17, 2007 Aska Yang was invited to perform at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall for the 42nd Golden Bell Awards. He sang a medley of eleven classic TV drama theme songs from the past century. [15]

The new personal album is scheduled to release at the end of Year 2007. The album would be submitted for the entry of the Golden Melody Awards (金曲獎) of the upcoming year.
