Dane Rauschenberg, born May 31, 1976, is an amateur athlete who, in calendar 2006, ran a marathon every weekend and raised money to benefit the Mobile, Alabama chapter of L'Arche Internationale as part of an effort he called "Fiddy2", with the goal of raising $52,000 for charity.[1] The 52nd and final race was run on December 30, 2006, with at least $32,000 raised to that point.[2]

Rauschenberg was recognized by MarathonGuide.com as the 6th ranked male of its 20 Outstanding USA Marathoners of the Year - 2006, citing his running 48 marathons to that point, including top three finishes at the Crazy Horse Marathon, Drake Well Marathon and the Run for the Ranch Marathon.[3]

Running resume

  • winning the Drake Well Marathon (December 23, 2006), a race he organized that involved twenty participants running around a track 105.5 times in Titusville, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
  • finishing first in a field of 52 runners the PT Cruiser Challenge (February 5-6, 2005), an event consisting of a 15k, 5k, and marathon within 24 hours in Tampa, Florida.[5]
  • running 84 miles at the Presque Isle Personal Endurance Classic (October 18, 2003), a 12 hour event in Erie, Pennsylvania. [6].
  • running 52 consecutive weekly marathons in 2006 with an average time of 3:21. By way of comparison, in terms of running a streak of marathons on consecutive weekends, Richard Worley completed marathons on 159 consecutive weekends,[7] but in times significantly slower than Rauschenberg's [8] In addition, during that same year, two people ran 50 marathon distances in 50 consecutive days, Sam Thompson and Dean Karnazes but neither held a job during their feat.

Biography

Rauschenberg ran his first marathon in 4:12:07[9] at the Harrisburg Marathon. Two years later, Rauschenberg ran the Erie Marathon, in 3:29:04[10] and finished 52nd overall. Neither time was particularly impressive. However, Rauschenberg then ran the Presque Isle Personal Endurance Classic, an event where participants ran a 1.0 mile loop in Presqle Isle State Park, in Erie, Pennsylvania for 12 hours. By running 84 miles (2nd place was 18 miles behind him), Rauschenberg showed a flash of his ability to run long distances with little recovery.[11]

Rauschenberg next ran the 2004 Marine Corps Marathon in 3:31:13 for 685th place. Three weeks after Marine Corps event, Rauschenberg ran another marathon in Marlyand dropping his personal best 10 minutes. On January 9, 2005, Rauschenberg ran in the Phoenix Rock N' Roll Marathon. His 3:09:55 finishing time at the Phoenix Rock N' Roll Marathon was good for 154th place out of 7,365 finishers, and good enough to qualify someone his age for the Boston Marathon.[12]

After this marathon, Rauschenberg won the PT Cruiser Challenge -- a weekend event consisting of 52 runners doing a 15K (1:00:54), 5K (18:59), and marathon (3:10:31) in a 24 hour period. Rauschenberg's marathon time nearly equaled his personal best even with the addition of two other races in the prior day. Having then devised the idea to run 52 consecutive weekly marathons, Rauschenberg prepared for Fiddy2 by running 5 marathons in a little over two months.[citation needed] As a final test, Rauschenberg ran the JFK 50 Mile Race finishing in 8:32:57, in 97th place.[13]

Rauschneberg most recently teamed up with another runner to battle teams of eight at the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay in New Hampshire. His team took 20th place overall (out of 85 teams) in this 65.1 mile event.[14]

Awards & recognition

  • Rauschenberg was one of four runners chosen to represent The 50 States Marathon Club at the MBC Hangang Marathon in Seoul, Korea on April 29, 2007.[15]
  • Asked to participate as a Charity Chaser for the Frederick Marathon where he would start last and receive a dollar for every runner he passed during the race.[16]
  • Metro Sports DC selected Dane as its Athlete of the Month for its July 2007 issue.[citation needed]
  • Selected co-Male Runner of the Year by the Washington Running Club in 2006.[17]
