Salatut elämät
Salatut elämät (= Secret(ed) lives) is Finnish half-hour long soap opera broadcast on MTV3, based on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. Since its first episode aired in January, 1999, it has been one of most popular TV shows in Finland, having around a million viewers. The series has dealt with subjects such as abortion, drug abuse, homosexuality, animal rights, religious fanaticism and racism, and caused public debate.
Even with its popularity the show has caused much irritation amongst active television-viewers as the show is almost contantly running either through new episodes or long periods of reruns. MTV3 has no hesitations of showing several episodes back-to-back particularly on occasions where there is a lot of air-time to fill (weekend afternoons being the most infamous).
