Leaena, probably Greek, was a prostitute. Her parents are unknown.
When Anaxandridas II was king of Sparta in the 6th century BC Harmodius and Aristogeiton were driven to kill the tyrant Hipparchus.[1] Among those captured by his successor was Leaena.[2] (c) She was suspected as being involved in the plot to murder Hipparchus because of her intimacy with the involvment of a number of other co-conspirators.[3] She was tortured to get information about the perpetrators involvement. Leaena then rose to the occassion to be virtuous, in spite of her "occupation", and bit her tongue off so she would not be capable of revealing detrimental information.[4]
