Motorized access restrictions from Poland on Usedom island
On account of traffic ban on cars, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds and motorized bicycles (buses are expressly allowed, as are pedestrians and nonmotorized bicycles) at the two road border crossings on the Usedom island, kept in place by treaty and enforced by Germany, motorized travel between the airport and Świnoujście is hapmpered. With the implementation by Poland of the Schengen Agreement on 1 January 2008 on land and at sea, these restrictions might disappear together with border controls between the two countries. However, it is conceivable that the German authorities will continue to restrict traffic access by non-buses from the Polish sector of Usedom on environment protection grounds or as part of noise abatement measures, etc., through traffic restrictions rather than border control means.
Baring road traffic restrictions, Heringdorf Airport is a natural commuter airport for all of Usedom, German or Polish.
