A-side | "Holler" |
Let Love Lead The Way was the one of the two first and final singles from the Spice Girls third LP, Forever.
The single was released internationally as a double A-side single (except for Canada it was counted separately from Holler) with "Holler". However the single was not released within the US. The song peaked at number one in the UK (becoming the group's 9th number 1 single). It also managed to clinch the number one spot in Brazil, Poland and the Philippines, and went top ten in eleven different countries.
The song was included in the group's Greatest Hits album. However, Geri's vocals have not been added to the Greatest Hits version of this song.
U.S. release
Confusion was set among fans when Emma Bunton spoke to MTV US about the lead single from their forthcoming album. She stated that Let Love Lead The Way would be released as a single within the US, however this statement was made months before the official single and album release. The album was still receiving touch ups from producers and mixers at the time the statement was made.
It is speculated that The Spice Girls had absolutely no intention of releasing Let Love Lead The Way in the USA. Instead, plans were to move forward with the song Weekend Love as the second single in the USA and Asia. It is thought that the UK would receive If You Wanna Have Some Fun and the rest of the world receive Tell Me Why. Weekend Love, If You Wanna Have Some Fun and Tell Me Why were to all see International and US releases at different times.
Asia success
The Spice Girls are the only act in the history of the Asia Hitlist that had all their released singles top the chart. This record was proven by "Let Love Lead The Way" which was their last official single in Asia. The song received a large amount of airplay immediately after "Holler" topped the charts in 2000. Since the song was set to be released in early 2001, the song was dominating radio airplay before it was officially allowed to chart. The song debuted at number eleven, falling short of tying their highest ever debut "Say You'll Be There" which charted at number ten on its first week. The song was fortunate to reach the top spot despite competition with Britney Spears' "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" which was having a build-up in radio airplay when the girls were number one.
Music video
The video for 'Let Love Lead the Way' is similar in concept to that of 'Holler' where each of the girls portray one of the four elements. Though this time, Emma Bunton switches elements with Melanie C, representing Earth, appearing in a green dress. She is shown reclining in a beautiful forest, underneath a large tree. Melanie B switches elements with Victoria Beckham, portrays the element Air, dressed entirely in white and dancing in a white room with the canvas walls billowing outwards as if being blown by the wind, while white feathers continuously fall from the sky. Victoria is wearing a dark red dress, represents Fire. She is slowly dancing in a barren desert at night, with bursts of fire flaring up behind her. Melanie C plays the part of Water, dressed in predominantly blue clothes. She is standing on a blue platform as water cascades from the ceiling to the floor. Throughout the verses of the song, the girls sing in their own areas, before coming together in one of the rooms for the chorus. Towards the end of the song, each of the elements begin to mix together, such as water falling down in the fiery desert and wind blowing through the forest. The four girls are then seen singing together in the desert where all the elements are present plus a shower of sparks behind the girls. The song finishes with a slow motion shot of each of the girls in their own areas, and then a final shot of each of them together in the White Room.
