Yamucha (ヤムチャ, Yamucha, or Yamcha in most English adaptations) is a fictional character who first appears in the Dragon Ball manga created by Akira Toriyama, followed by an anime series, including Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. He is introduced as a desert bandit and started out as an antagonist of Son Goku but quickly reformed and became an ally and Z Fighter. His constant companion is Pu'ar. His seiyū is Tōru Furuya. In the English dub, he was voiced by Ted Cole and later Christopher Sabat.

Appereance

Yamucha's appearance stays relatively the same for the majority of the series, although his clothes and hairstyle are changed a few times in both the original series and Dragon Ball Z. Several of these hairstyles are also used (most likely coincidentally) by Son Gohan at various points in his life.[1] According to Artificial Human 19's scanner, Yamucha is 183 centimeters tall and weighs 68 kilograms, during the Android Saga.[2]

Summary

Dragon Ball

Yamucha enters the series early in Dragon Ball as a desert bandit; he ambushes Son Goku, Bulma and Oolong as they are traveling the desert in order to steal their money and capsules.[3] He also becomes a student under Muten Roshi and loses his fear of women through his relationship with Bulma.[4]

Dragon Ball Z

At the start of the series it is revealed he has become a Triple A baseball player. Yamucha dies along with Tenshinhan, Chaozu and Piccolo in the battle against Nappa, and goes on to train with North Kaio in the afterlife just as Son Goku did, growing greatly in power.[5] Through North Kaio, he is able to witness his friends battles on Planet Namek; when Goku is thought to have been killed in the destruction of the Planet Namek after defeating Freeza, Yamucha relays the information to everyone through his girlfriend Bulma. He is returned to life 130 days later from a wish to Porunga and continues to live at Capsule Corp with Bulma and, after the two finally end their relationship, she enters a long-term relationship with Vegeta.[6]

Abilities

Yamucha is skilled as a swordsman (he is seen using a sword early in the series)[7] and makes clever use of Rogafufuken,[8] a fictional hand-to-hand attack and his trademark. He is able to pull off basic Kamehameha waves,[9] as well as some variations. Another ability, Sokidan, is a fast homing energy sphere capable of going underground for a surprise attack. He trained under North Kai, which is when he completely perfected his usage of energy based attacks and defeated Reacoome of the Ginyu Force. Like many other characters in Dragon Ball, Yamucha has the ability of Bukujutsu, a technique that allows him to fly. Later during the series Yamucha uses a variety of generic chi blasts.
