William Jewell College was founded in 1849 when the Missouri legislature granted a charter which created the first four-year men’s college west of the Mississippi. Today, Jewell continues to earn a solid reputation as one of mid-America’s most consistently honored and academically challenging private colleges. With its academic culture and focus on student achievement, the college promises students an outstanding liberal arts education that cultivates leadership, service, and spiritual growth within a community inspired by Christian ideals and committed to open, rigorous intellectual pursuits.
Student Achievement
William Jewell students consistently earn high-profile national recognition: • William Jewell College’s Debate Team captured the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence championship in 2007, defeating top-seeded University of California-Berkeley to win the national team title. • In 2006 and 2007, the college claimed a Fulbright Scholar, a Goldwater Scholar, two Rhodes Scholar national finalists, a Truman Scholar, a National Institute of Health Fellow, a George J. Mitchell Scholarship, a Council of Independent Colleges American Graduate Fellowship finalist and a Point Foundation Scholar. • William Jewell College was among a select group of colleges and universities nationwide recognized for extraordinary community service as part of the first-ever President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Students contributed more than 25,000 hours of service learning and community service in 2006-07. • Jewell’s student athletes excel in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. In 2007 the men’s teams notched the highest grade point average in the conference for the fifth consecutive year.
Institutional Accolades
William Jewell College is enjoying an increasingly high national profile. Only about 15% of the four-year colleges in the U.S. appear in the student survey-based rankings. Princeton also listed William Jewell in America’s “Top Ten Best Values” among all private colleges and universities in 2006. • William Jewell faculty members have received five Fulbright awards in the last six years. • Jewell was named “Liberal Arts College of the Year” in 2001 by TIME Magazine.
Distinctive Programs
The internationally recognized Oxbridge Honors Program, supported by the Hall Family Foundation, combines British tutorial methods of instruction with opportunities for a year of study in Oxford or Cambridge. • The new Applied Critical Thought and Inquiry major (ACT-In) allows most students to graduate with a second major by completing the liberal arts core plus three applied learning experiences. • Jewell’s new Non-Profit Leadership major is one of only 90 nationwide. It allows students to fulfill all of the nonprofit competencies established by American Humanics and meets the guidelines for graduate study in philanthropy, the nonprofit sector and nonprofit leadership established by the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC). • The Harriman-Jewell Series is considered the Midwest’s premier program in the performing arts. Luciano Pavarotti made his international solo recital debut as part of the series, and each year’s schedule includes the best and brightest dance and theater companies, orchestras, ensembles and recitalists. • The Pryor Leadership Studies Program includes course work, community service projects and internships that help students enhance their leadership skills in a variety of settings.
