Human Rights Activists

  • Clara Luper Regarded by many as the "Mother of the Sit-In Movement," because of civil rights sit-ins that she started August 19, 1958, when she was a 34-year-old history teacher. More information is at [100] [101] [102]
  • Alan Berkman ?
  • Rufina Amaya -- virtually the sole survivor of the 1981 El Mozote massacre, Ms. Amaya became a human rights activist through her courageous determination in the face of enormous countervailing pressures to let the world know what had happened at El Mozote and to force the El Salvadoran government to acknowledge and take responsibility for the attrocities. It was her lone determined voice that ultimately gained for the victims and the Salvadoran people official international recognition of the massacre as well as official UN sanctioning of the government of El Salvador for human rights abuse. She continued throughout the remainder of her life to speak out fearlessly against human rights abuses through the countless retellings, interviews and testimonies she provided regarding the massacre, and also through her involvement in Comunidad Segundo Montes (see [103] and

[104]) and the War-Wounded Association (ALGES) of Morozan (again see [105] and also [106]).

  • Morris B. Abram UN Watch Founder, Victorious Lawyer in Supreme Court's "One Man, One Vote" ruling
  • Ruby Hurley-opened the firs permanent NAACP office in the deep South in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1951.
  • Jean Byers Sampson Deceased Maine (USA) Political and Civil Rights activist who worked with the Maine Civil Liberties Union and NAACP
  • Geri Palast - CEO of CFE

Historical Figures

Correct spelling is Trypho or Tryphon, who can be (or may have been intended to be, as a literary device) identified with Rabbi Tarfon, a Greek-trained philosopher. I'll try putting in a couple of redirect pages. There was a Typho- but that's definitely not this guy.
