The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) (in French, Centre universitaire de santé McGill) is a network of five teaching hospitals in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, all of which are affiliated with McGill University.
The network has one Board of Directors and was formed from the legal merger of the following Montreal hospitals:
- Montreal General Hospital (MGH)
- Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH)
- Montreal Children's Hospital (MCH)
- Montreal Neurological Hospital (MNH)
- Montreal Chest Institute (MCI)
The MUHC is officially a bilingual institution, providing services in both French and English, as well as a number of other languages, as necessary.
The MUHC is planning on closing several of its current hospital facilities and replacing them with a new state-of-the-art campus at the former Glen Railyards, near the Vendôme metro station, and the Mountain Campus, currently the site of the Montreal General Hospital, which is to remain open as a downtown general hospital with an Emergency Department. This plan received the green light from the Quebec government in June 2007 to proceed as a public private partnership (PPP). The Montreal Neurological Hospital (MNH), will move to the new Mountain campus — the Montreal Neurological Institute(MNI), which is legally part of the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning (McGill University) will remain adjacent to the McGill University downtown campus. The Jewish General Hospital (JGH), the Douglas Hospital (specialized in psychiatry) and St. Mary's Hospital, which are also McGill University teaching hospitals, are not part of the MUHC.
There was a chance that the "private", but McGill-affiliated, Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children would move from Montreal. The Shriners Hospital-Canada in Montreal was threatened with closure after a Shriner's committee recommended that the institution be moved to London, Ontario, instead of rebuilding in Montreal. Their current site adjacent to the Montreal General Hospital is too small. This move was opposed by the Shriners of New England, and of Ottawa, as well as the government and people of Quebec and McGill University, because it would have made patient access from New England and Eastern Canada more difficult and would have removed a major teaching and research resource from Montreal. In July 2005 the Shriners agreed to keep the hospital in Montreal and planning continues to move it to a separate building on the MUHC Glen Campus, which will also be the future home of the Montreal Childrens Hospital.
