"My All" was the fifth single from Mariah Carey's 7th album, Butterfly.
The Song
The single, released in 1998, was co-written and co-produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff. In this spanish guitar influenced track, Mariah laments on how she would give "her all" to have just one more night with her estranged lover.
Chart Success
Although "My All" was the fifth single released from the Butterfly album, in reality it was only the third major single released from the album, and only the second single released commercially in the USA, due to drama that Mariah was having with Sony, her record label at the time. Nevertheless, "My All" became Mariah's record breaking 13th US #1 hit and another fairly large international smash.
The song had become Mariah's 2nd single to debut at #2 (following "Always Be My Baby"), snd 2 weeks later it ascended to #1, a peak it maintained for only one week. This was her 1st #1 single to spend no longer than a week at the top. It also spent only 18 weeks in the Top 40 and 2 further weeks on the Hot 100 which was a relatively short stay for a Carey #1 single. Infact, Carey's record for having a #1 single every year was only continued by 1 week this year with none of her other 1998 singles topping the charts.
Topping the Hot 100 Single Sales, the single continued the trend begun with "Honey" of a low peak on the Hot 100 Airplay this time stalling at #15. This trend would quickly work against Carey with the album cut implementation to the charts in December of 1998, when the chart became much more focused on airplay than sales; "My All" marked the last single release from Carey before this modification to the Hot 100. It should also be noted that the single was promoted in the USA as a double a-sided single with "Breakdown" as its b-side. The single eventually went on to achieve Platinum certification.
Internationally, it was a moderately successful hit generally achieving medium peaks in most charts. It was most successful in the UK and Brazil, going Top 5 in both countries.
Music Video
The music video shot entirely in black and white, on location in Puerto Rico, ranks among one of Mariah's most famous especially as it was one of the last music videos directed by the legendary fashion photographer Herb Ritts (before he passed away due to complications of HIV). The video starts out with Mariah lamenting about her estranged lover as she lies tragically on a surfboard in the ocean. The video progresses to Mariah exploring the beach past innocent flowers and a beaming light from the beach's lighthouse. The video climaxes to the point where Mariah and her lover share a tragic, yet sensual moment as they make out leading viewers to believe that Mariah and her lover will reconcile. Unfortunately, the video sadly ends with Mariah alone in love.
Remixes: So So Def Remix/Remix Music Video
"My All" ranks among one of Mariah's most remixed tracks, and two maxi singles were even released in the USA. The main R&B remix of this single was known as "My All/Stay Awhile (So So Def Remix)" The remix, featuring resung vocals from Mariah, is built around a sample of the Loose Ends track "Stay A Little While. It was produced by Jermaine Dupri and featues raps from Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. A music video was also created of this remix which features Mariah, Jermaine, Lord Tariq, and Peter Guns partying at a friend's house. The video is shot in a grainy fashion to simulate a home video.
Remixes: Classic Club Mix And Other Morales Remixes/Remix Music Video
"My All" was also remixed by David Morales with the main dance remix being known as "My All (Classic Club Mix)". "My All" was the first major single remixed by David Morales that did not feature Mariah resinging her vocals, and as a result, the song is fairly close to the original chord progressions of the album version. (However, Mariah did go into the studio to add new vocals to the existing originals.) Nevertheless, the remix was a major dance hit re-establishing David Morales and Mariah Carey in the competetive field of club music among club music critics and the dance charts of Billboard. The original Herb Ritts music video was also re-edited and released as the official video to the "Classic Radio Mix" version of the song.
