Rennweg am Katschberg
Rennweg am Katschberg is a town in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia, Austria.
Geography
Rennweg is a considerably small village located in the Katschtal valley. It is a portion of a valley known as the Liesertal in the south of Austria. Its location near the Katschbergtunnel, a tunnel connecting the states of Salzburg and Carinthia, gives its citizens and travelers access to the Autobahn. Katschberg, a mountain at the Katschtal valley is considered one the largest skiing resorts in Carinthia bringing much the towns attraction and reputation.
Nearby Establishments
Gmünd, an establishment south of Rennweg, acts as a connecting point between the Liesertal and Maltatal valleys. Spittal an der Drau, another establishment, is located southeast of Gmünd.
Millstätter See, a nearby lake acts as an attraction for many tourists.
By traveling further south on the Autobahn the city of Villach can be reached.
Culture
Music
The Katschtaler Trachtenkapelle, a group of instrumentalists, has played its share in the local concerts of the area. Considering its small size, its large sound, and revival of the area's Volksmusic, it can be said that the Katschtaler Trachetenkapelle can be compared to no other band. Its vive of cultural experience brings the tourists a sense of Austrian influence. The music heard here is often found only in places like Rennweg, small villages that have not left behind the cultural music that has for centuries been a part of the Austrian culture.
Religion
The church St. Georgen can be found on the west side of the Katschtal valley. St. Peter another church which can be found on the east side of the valley has recently been renovated. It is located at the small village of St. Peter.
Katschberg
Katschberg is popular ski resort on the border of Salzburg and Carinthia. It lies on a plateau directly above the Katschberg tunnel, at an altitude of 1,641m. It is an upmarket ski resort consisting mainly of four-star hotels and vacation apartments, most of which have easy access to the ski lifts. It retains a strong traditional atmosphere, and the local culture is regularly celebrated in folkloric evenings.
Katschberg’s 60kms of well maintained ski slopes span across two mountain tops. The resort’s longest run is eight kilometres, leading from the top of Aineck Mountain to the village of St Margarethen. The ski slopes are serviced by a system of 16 lifts with a capacity for 24,000 people per hour.
World War II
During the 30's and 40's at the time of the second world war much of Austria had been influenced by the Nazi movement spreading throughout much of Europe. World War II would have great affects on much of the population and Austrian society at the time. This was a time of relative peace, a time when war was not considered an option for Austria. Although the corrosive affects of Nazism and the war would play its part in many societies in Austria a village like Rennweg am Katschberg wasn't directly affected by the war. All were forced to support the war against the Allies although someone living a small life at Rennweg am Katschberg wouldn't care much for the war.
