Changing Wikipedia articles

Hello,

We read your changes to Forty-seven Ronin. You're right that it's easy for anyone to change articles. We want to keep it easy so that readers can correct errors, and we'd like to invite you to search for mistakes and set them right. Also, if you set up a free account and log in, you can add articles to your Watchlist. It's easy --- just click on the Watch button when you're looking at an article and logged in. Then, any time you click on the "my watchlist" link, you can track all the changes to the articles that are on your list. So give it a try! We always welcome improvements! Fg2 03:08, Oct 26, 2004

Untitled (Welcome and sandbox article)

Hello Y0u,

Welcome to Wikipedia.

BTW, Why are you trying to protect your SandBox article? Doing some research on revert wars - (what's that)? - Stevey7788

Actually, I'm keeping it here until I find the place where you test creating new pages... I can't find it (searched for a few hours) and I'm not sure that I want to list it as a user subpage because I don't want it to be about me, just something I found (based on an article which as far as I can tell is in the public domain) and contributed. Y0u 02:20, Mar 13, 2005 (UTC)
Just create a user subpage titled "Test page please don't edit," or something like that. Stevey7788
Done. Actually, I want other people to edit (so long as they keep the overall original page- although I would have no objections if it slowly evolved...) I consider this my "Random Nonsense" section.

Substubs and sentences

Wikipedia is not a dictionary, and its articles should not resemble dictionary entries. I've vented my annoyance at quite a few substub authors in edit summaries over the last few days as I've been trying to clean up the gigantic cesspool that is Category:Substubs. Imagine three thousand articles that don't consist of more than two sentences at best. Now imagine having seen several hundred substubs where the author didn't seem to care enough about the subject to even bother with a verb. After a while, it makes you irritable to the point of berating people without even bothering to see who wrote the thing.

It's my own personal opinion that nobody should start an article unless they can write a couple-of-three sentences about the subject. Otherwise, why bother? It doesn't violate any actual rules, but it's not good style, nor is it terribly helpful to readers. -- Cyrius| 03:37, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Denjo's nonsense

Denjo is not adding nonsense, s/he is adding BIONICLE fancruft. There is a very important difference: nonsense is in bad faith, Denjo's contributions are not. I hate fancruft, and I'm sure you do to, but it isn't nonsense. I'm working on cleaning up after Denjo now, so don't worry about it to much. Cheers, →Iñgōlemo← talk 00:08, 2005 Jun 2 (UTC)

Spam warning

Hello! When you add a warning about spam-links (or vandalims) to a Talk page, could you sign it? It makes it easier for future editors to gauge the frequency and seriousness of repeat offences if the earlier warnings are dated. Thanks. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:31, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed you removed a vote made by an anonymous user. As a rule, we don't ever remove votes, even if they're made in bad faith (which this vote certainly wasn't). It's up to the administrator closing the vote to evaluate the merits of each vote. Anonymous votes cast by obvious sockpuppets are generally disregarded; votes by genuine Wikipedians who haven't registered are usually at least taken into consideration. Standard procedure for votes that are left unsigned is to add a signature, not to remove them. JRM · Talk 23:31, 2005 Jun 3 (UTC)

VfD page

The VfD nominations you are adding to the page aren't working correctly because they are categories, not articles. Categories should get {{cfd}} and go to Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion. I'll fix these up, if someone else doesn't beat me to it. Thanks. --Tabor 18:20, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Don't be afraid to list something for speedy deletion if it's definitely nonsense or vandalism. {{del}} will do it. Here's the criteria to follow. --Barfooz (talk) 22:37, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

From the Bank of Wikipedia. Your account is opened

I opened your account. Our bank applied Rule 3.1, and now you have 125 initial coins. By accepting these initial coins, you accept rule 3 and you are also willing to give an appropriate amount of coins to newbies. Please express any possible disagreement in the rules page. You can use these coins as a medium of exchange here in wikipedia. For example, you can ask another wikipedian to make specific contributions, deletions, or cast votes for a subject, or pay him with your money for whatever reason. Its not bank's job to punish you in case your transactions are against wikipedia policy. But have in mind that if you are doing illegal transactions, you may be punished by admins. The bank is going to pay you 2 coins for each person you are going to introduce to the Bank.

Whatever transactions you are doing with other wikipedians, please do them in User_talk:Bank_of_Wikipedia. The trusted employees of the bank are going to confirm the validity of your transactions, and they are going to copy them (after a short delay) to your official account that resides in User:Bank_of_Wikipedia userpage.

You are welcome! Bank of Wikipedia 07:36, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You gave 13.88 coins to newbie account User:Hall_Monitor

This is because of Rule 3.1. In case you dont like this rule, please express your opinion about it. In case you think you are giving a lot fo money to newbies, you may ask the amount given to newbies to diminish (propose another A value in Rule 3.3). In case you think this newbie is a sockpuppet then, according to Rule 3.1, you have the power to judge (together with the rest bank accounts) and expell him/her/it from the bank.

Please inform the bank in case you dont want to receive furhter messages from the bank concerning newbies arrival and payement.

Yours truly. Bank of Wikipedia 05:56, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Misunderstanding

Thank You for telling me about the GNU Free Documentation License. I did not know about that, and was confused as to why you had removed my signatures. Does this mean that none of the pages I write I can accredit myself with. (Not including the talk pages) So if I write an article on a topic that is not copyrighted will I be able to put my signature there? Also, am I using this talk feature correctly, and is this the only way to communicate through Wikipedia? --Aslan's Mane 18:32, Jun 8, 2005

Hi Y0u,

You have placed the above-mentioned image for speedy deletion. However after looking at the circumstances I recommend that you pass it through Images for Deletion instead.

I personally think that it can be removed, and I voiced my support for it. I mainly think it is a copyvio, plus I do not know if the image can be deleted soley that it is used for vandalism. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 20:27, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

GregLoutsenko's suggestions

no one ever read my suggestions, so...

i just spent last couple of minutes clicking the random article link in wikipedia and found to my suprise that most of the article i came across were in fact couple of pages long and were not a stub. where do you people think wikipedia is heading?

i recon that in a decade all other encyclopedeas will be obsolete or will have to merge in order to keep up with wikipedia's growth rate. even encarta has now began allowing user editing, although any editing has to be approved by an editor first.

although i have some doubts if wikipedia will be able to maintain its organisation of articles in order, already there are many article which are basically on the same topic but are placed under slightly different names. i certainly hope that the community and the designers will be able to come up with solutions for these problems. i would really hope that wikipedia will be able to expand into more technical topics, like details of complier error messages and specific, very technical, medical topics, i dont c why it cant happen. wikipedia has no limits on space so pretty much any article is acceptable. if only wikipedia can get a wider community of users.

i also would really like a spell checker for the editing section and a more visual editing environment. i also think that there should be a simple 10 star review system of articles, a review for quality of language, review for point of view, and correctness.

the "discussion" section should be made into a standard forum type, because at the minute the layout does make it difficut to read through suggestions, or at least more difficult then would have been if it was a standard forum, like phpbb.

and why not have google ads?! it will bring in more cash to speed up the servers...

there should really be a more organized layout of the help section/rules section and stuff on templates and stubs. it took me like days to figure all the stuff out needed and i still dont think i know all the formatting tricks and the way wiki works/where to find stubs to write on and so on. its just a mess of links.

also i would really like way more statistics for each article, or at least a reorganization of stat section coz at the minute it takes me far too long to find stats i am looking for, most of the time these stats dont even exist. GregLoutsenko 16:02, Jun 10, 2005

female to male ratio of wikipedeans

what is the female to male ratio of wikipedeans? it seems only males are active, and more spacificly i think that wikipedea tends to focus more on computing and programming and science then anything else becuase of the kinds of people who are intrested in this project. stable articles

i was thinking is there like list of stable articles? by that i mean articles which are fairly big and they have not been changed for a long time. if wiki could then cross reference that with popularity of articles it could make it easier to prioritse making spoken versions of the articles. btw when a minor change occures to an article does the sound version get deleted automaticly? if not it should because it will be incorret. although this leaves wiki wide open to vandalism where 1 guy could slightly change all the spoken articles.--GregLoutsenko 21:11, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

what i mean is that sarticles which havent been massivly added to. there must be some articles which are simply it, as good as its going to get. maybe some sections will still be tweaked but the nuts and bolts of the articles is there...--GregLoutsenko 21:25, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Computer_and_video_games_that_have_been_considered_the_greatest_ever

you article Computer_and_video_games_that_have_been_considered_the_greatest_ever is a bit biased towards modern games which are the ones which have been reviewed by industry mags and websites like pcgamer and gamespot. however other much much much more important games should be in that article too. i was actually thinking of doing games which changed the world article yesterday but decided against it coz its just going to be my opinion. anyway try adding games like wolfenstein, doom, duke nukem, pong, tetris (although is on the list it needs a way biggermention), pacman, space invaders, dune 2. there are many other vintage games which need to be added and considered. i also think more pictures are needed.--GregLoutsenko 16:17, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

wikinfo, is that really needed?!

wikinfo is intresting because they are trying to correct some of the "problems" with wikipedia, like trying to get rid of edit wars by simply allowing articles to be biased. however any encyclopedia must be clearly unbiased and balanced. if someone wants to write something critical or biased they can make a website or write a book, not write it in an encyclopeadia. the edit wars are there for a reason, to make sure articles are of highest standard and do not just cover i side (like fox news). i believe that any edit war can be absolutly resolved through simply having a "critism" section, like say on the microsoft article, or saying something like "....while others would say that....and this may be true because..." then let the reader form their own final opinion. --GregLoutsenko 17:40, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Isn't that what the discussion pages are for? JarlaxleArtemis 23:48, Jun 19, 2005 (UTC)

DVDEmpire.com (and associated redirects such as AdultDVDEmpire.com)

Hey there, Y0u;

What's your thinking on this entry? On the one hand, I'm loath to delete it, because - if all the claims in the article are true - it's a fairly significant retailer/online landmark (mid-90s online DVD retailer). On the other hand, the user who created it seems to be highly POV and very adamant about its importance... "methinks he doth protest too much". I'd appreciate your input; drop me one on my Talk page, please. jglc | t | c 18:37, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Uh-oh. Problems: I tried to re-edit DVDEmpire.com for a more NPOV entry, and the user has come after me on my talk page, telling me that my grammar was poor, I have "problems with pornography", and asking me for information on my "supervisor". Can you please help me out with this? Thanks, jglc | t | c 20:07, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • I don't know what to make of all this. On the one hand, I accept that his/her original article was pretty well-written. On the other hand, I feel very strongly that the entry, in its original version, was very nearly ad-copy: that is needed to be cleaned up to present a neutral, encyclopaedic, version of events.
    • In addition, user just posted this comment on my talk page, which suggests to me that s/he may very well be an employee of DVDEmpire.com]. Which may or may not be a strike against him/her, but is still something to consider.
    • All in all: I really don't mean to be a vandal or start an edit war. I do feel strongly about Wikipedia being as NPOV as possible, as well as not being a web-directory or promotional tool/funnel for advertisors. I'm conflicted as to what I ought to do (let Los_Diablos simply run rampant over the entry? Watch the page with an iron fist? Somewhere in between?), and would greatly appreciate some advice. jglc | t | c 21:00, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
As per your suggestion, DVDEmpire.com is (obviously) on my Watchlist. I will continue to strive for NPOV and to get along with Los Diablos. Here's hoping it won't be too much stress. jglc | t | c 21:11, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dvdempire

if you read his initial posts, s/he made it clear that he has problems with pornography. next, under the guise of npov, he ruined the article and many of the ideas behind it. lastly, his grammar is atrocious. i don't understand how that guy happened along, seconds after i made my page live, and deleted graphics (mistakeningly i might add), but i will not sit by and let him ruin my piece cause s/he just likes jerking people around. take a look at his talk page, i'm not the only one with issues with him. what do you do with wikipedians run amuck? 15:35, Jun 16, 2005 Los Diablos

In my defense, I would like to state that my grammar is impeccable. I have test scores, if you want to see them ;) jglc | t | c 20:56, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

wikipedia's shortcomings and a compromise

in jasonglchu's zeal to defend the "rules" of this site (which i understand are more like guidelines), jasonglchu is trampling on the very ideas wikipedia was founded on.

1. wikipedia is a COMMUNITY of users: if jasonglchu edits new entries (as s/he so proudly admitted to doing to mine within seconds of its going live on the site) to how jasonglchu deems it should be, then are you not acting counter to the basic idea of wiki... that this site is a community of people, where people from all walks of life contribute. it is not one person, with by all appearances nothing else to do, editing every post to how he wants it to read.

as i see it, jasonglchu's behavior toward newcomers is the proverbial "weak link" of this site and will ultimately be its downfall. by jasonglchu's own admission, jasonglchu didn't even read the entry and was trying to delete it. that is just absurd.

2. newcomers are the life blood of wikipedia: if jasonglchu attacks every newcomer to wikipedia seconds after they list an entry, as he did with me, then why would someone want to come back and list something else on this site. after i saved my entry, i didn't even get a new browser window open and clicked over to wikipedia before my graphic had been taken down and jasonglchu was threatening to delete the entire entry. and being a newcomer, i not only found that highly combative, but felt as though i had to respond in kind before he destroyed my work.

i for one will never be back except to monitor my page. and i think "YOu" and jasonglchu both need to read this page, jasonglchu pretty much VIOLATED EVERY guideline set forth for conduct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_don%27t_bite_the_newcomers

3. lastly, i am making a few edits to the page. but i will leave your NPOV changes in, not because i think you are right, but because i simply don't have the time to keep fighting you over this.

i will be changing the heading of the 3rd chapter to read simply "Future Expansion." and in that following paragraph, "Adult Entertainment" to "Adult Movies" which wikilinks to pornography.

i see that as a compromise.

Hi You. I've been a long time using Wikipedia and seeking to remove vandalism, update websites and provide adequate information especially when it comes to concern my mother country Malta.

Before submitting using my username - Maltesedog - I have submitted a number of entries without even registering/logging in due to pressure of time. 212.56.128.186.

I beg to request to become an administrator of Wikipedia especially to monitor Maltese related sites. The number of vuglur words in Maltese which I found in the respective sites is not something nice.

I agree. The bad thing is i didn't use to log in. I just have to work harder then. Yeps, i was referrign to the english wikipedia obviously. i do not believe contributing to the maltese wikipedia would enhance world knowledge as such because of the size of the country.

Does that mean one month straight or one month since I signed up or what? XYZ123 29 June 2005 21:59 (UTC)

Subst:'ing speedy deletion notices

Please do not subst: speedy deletion notices, as it's annoying (it causes the page to go over the threshold for autofilling the delete reason box with "content was:" and the content). --cesarb 29 June 2005 22:03 (UTC)

Congratulations, you're an admin!

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, blocking users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. You might find the administrators' how-to guide helpful. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 30 June 2005 21:31 (UTC)

Yay, your first block? A worthy one, congrats :) --W(t) 30 June 2005 21:52 (UTC)

Y0u blocked "User:Y0u" with an expiry time of 1 day (Repeated vandalism)
Ok, not quite such a worthy block. Still, I see you're getting the hang of things… --W(t) 30 June 2005 21:55 (UTC)

Yep. I undid my block and blocked the IP address. I'm being sure to be VERY CAREFUL with my admin powers and leave them alone unless I'm ABSOLUTELY SURE I'm using them correctly (being bold certainly doesn't apply here.) Anyway, I was literally laughing out loud (and this is in a college computer lab!) when I realized I had blocked myself. You (Talk) June 30, 2005 21:58 (UTC)

Don't sweat it, everything apart from image deletions can be undone by you or any other admin. --W(t) 30 June 2005 22:01 (UTC)
And page history merges. Avoid them if you are not really sure of what you are doing; undoing them involves going through every revision, by hand, on the limited undelete interface (which doesn't show diffs or source). And to make matters worse, it's a convoluted and ill-documented procedure. --cesarb 30 June 2005 22:11 (UTC)

spliting up wikipedia

wikipedia needs to be split into wikipedia, autobiographys and geographical locations. it seems like a logical step from wikinews and wikispecies. it will also make it easier for anyone who wants to write an article on a geographical location or a person.--GregLoutsenko 5 July 2005 12:26 (UTC)
