Chinese lucky numbers are based on words that sound similar to that of the number. Thus the numbers six, eight, and nine have auspicious meaning. The number six, pronounced Liu, means slippery which can mean everything goes smoothly. Eight in Mandarin is pronounced Ba and sounds similar to the Canotonese word Fa which means fortune. Finally the number nine, pronounced Jiu, sounds like the word for everlasting.
