Matthew Dodsworth (about 1544 - 1631) was the father of the noted Yorkshire antiquary, Roger Dodsworth. He was the second son of Simon Dodsworth of Settrington, Yorkshire and Agnes Harrison and was born in Settrington about 1544.[1]

He entered St John's College, Cambridge and matriculated pensioner from St. John's at Easter 1565. He gained his LL.B from Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1573.[2]

He married on 15 Sep 1578, in Oswaldkirk, Eleanor, daughter of Ralph Sandwith Esq. of Newton Grange, Oswaldkirk, by Mary Segrave his wife.[3]

Before 1593, he had been appointed as Judge for the Admiralty Court in the northern counties.[4] and later he became Chancellor and Registrar of Tobias Matthew, Archbishop of York (1606 – 1628).

Matthew Dodsworth and Eleanor had a total of 15 children, baptised in Oswaldkirk, Yorkshire, St. Michael le Belfry, York, and Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York between. October 1579 and August 1603. Roger Dodsworth, baptised on 24 April 1585 in St Oswald, Oswaldkirk, was their fourth child and first son.

Eleanor Dodsworth, wife of Matthew, was buried at Saxton in Elmet, Yorkshire on 26 April 1613.[5]

Matthew died before 7 October 1631 in Slingsby, North Yorkshire when his will was administered at York.[6]
