HMailServer
Appearance
One general advantage of storing mail on Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) servers, instead of storing it first on POP3 servers, and then on PCs is:
For users:
- access to all their mail, including sent items, from other PCs.
For administrators:
- backup all mail on the server, instead of on each PC.
- synchronize with fail-over server for improved uptime (even better if at another physical location!)
- reduce internet traffic, since PC mail clients authenticate to the local IMAP server, instead of to the remote POP3 server.
HMailServer runs on Windows, also supports POP3 and SMTP open email standard protocols, and stores data in MySQL or MS_SQL. It is free, with frequent updates, and has active support and development forums.
Integration is supported for many related applications, including:
- squirrelmail for webmail, (requires IIS or Apache_server); spell-checking available
- clamav for antivirus
- SpamAssassin for antispam, etc.
