The New York City Housing Authority Police Department was officially created in 1952. The roots of this organization go back to 1934 and the creation of the New York City Housing Authority. Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia authorized to hiring of Special Patrolmen to patrol the city's public housing buildings. The Housing Police were merged with the New York City Police Department in 1995 and remain today as the Housing Bureau.
