Qtrax is an ad-supported P2P music service that has claimed to have made license agreements with the four major record labels (EMI, SonyBMG, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group[3]). In actuality, all four companies have stated that no deals have been made. [4] Qtrax also claims to have 25,000,000 copyright songs available for free legal download. [5] The files will have Microsoft's Windows Media digital rights management technology applied, restricting usage of files in as-yet-to-be-determined ways.[6] Songs can be loaded on to portable media players compatible with WMDRM; this currently excludes Apple's iPod line of portable media devices, which use FairPlay DRM. However, company representatives claim to have discovered a work-around that will allow for iPod support in the near future- it is reported that this will be in April.

The software uses Mozilla web browsing software to deliver the content over P2P networks. Qtrax has spent 5 years in development and is much heralded as the best way forward for ad-supported music.

The Qtrax beta software was scheduled to be available for download at midnight EST on January 28, 2008 (5am GMT, January 28, 2008).[7] However, as of 1 PM EST, the software is still unavailable. A version for Mac OS X will be available on the 1st April '08.

Despite announcements to the contrary, Universal Music Group, EMI and Warner Music Group have not yet finalised agreements with Qtrax.[8]
