The first fraternity was the Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) which was organized in 1776 at the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. it started as a social organization but later became a Honorary Scholastic Society in 1883.
Many early fraternities and Sororities developed out of literary and debating societies. Their secretive nature made them suspect, and many college officials opposed them. Nevertheless, they spread. the first women's society patterned like a fraternity was Adelphean(later called Alpha Delta Phi (ADF) organization in 1851 at Wesleyan College, Macon, Georgia, USA.
