The municipality of Aculco is located surrounded by : • North: The municipalities of Polotitlan • East: The municipalities of Jilotepec • South: The municipalities of Acambay and Timilpan • West: State of Queretaro Aculco is 1 :15 minutes from Toluca and 108.3 km Etymological word Aculco means Atl “water”; cóltic “twisted” y co “in”, "in the twisted water", in Otomí means "two water", because there can be founded sweet and salted water. Aculco is a town next to the mountains and between spectacular rocks and the Conception’s waterfall. This municipally has admirable natural richness: for example, te Ñado Da, in a environment of exceptional beautiful. [2]

The municipality of Aculco has a geographical extent of 484.7 km², that represent the 2.18% of the State. According with INEGI in 2005 Aculco has a population of 40,492. [3]

Some Aculco people show its Otomies origins and dress in a traditional way; they elaborate ìxtle and wool fabrics with which they manufacture mrrales, ayates, nets and dresses, in the same way that ancient natives used to make it. [4]


The town was founded around the year 1110 by Otomy people, it was conquered by Aztecas. Spanish arrived here and constructed the convent of San Jerónimo in 1540. In this place Miguel Hidalgo lost the fight with Félix Ma. Calleja, fighting for Mexico’s Independence.

On February 19, 1825 Aculco was considered a municipality of the State. During 1914 y 1915 this Aculco was the place of many fights in the Revolution when carrancistas, villistas y Zapatistas fought.

About Aculco’s economy the principals sectors are: • Agriculture: maize (corn), with 80 % of the cultivable area and in minor percentage there is the bean, oats and vegetables as lettuce, carrots and radishes. And fruits like; pear, apple, plum, small peach, capulín, perón, tejocote, sapota, lemon, lime and orange. • Ranching : production of porcine, bovinely, sheep, caprino and equine. Aculco is famous for its milk and cheese. [5]
