Lady Emily Cowper

Emily cowper(1787-1869) was one of the patronesses of the famous social club of the regency period , the Almack's.

PERSONAL LIFE:

Lady Cowper was the daughter of the 1st Lord Melbourne and married, as the Hon. Emily Mary Lamb, the 5th Earl of Cowper on the 21st of July, 1805. The Earl died in 1837 and two years afterwards, Lady Sarah married the 3rd Lord Palmerston. She was to have one brother who would be Prime Minister, with her second husband being another. The couple lived at No. 94 Piccadilly in Cambridge House, once home to the Duke of Cambridge. It was said that many of the ephemeral quarrels at Almack's were smoothed over by her ready wit and tact. Lady Palmerston fully enjoyed her husband's confidence, in both private and political affairs, and she is credited with much of his success. Prince Puckler Muskau wrote of her, "We rode over to pay a visit to Lady Cowper. The park and house of Panshanger are well worth seeing, especially the picture gallery, which contains two of Raphael's early Madonna's. Lady Cowper received us in her boudoir, which led immediately into a beautiful garden, on the other side of which are green-houses, and a dairy in the form of a temple."

SOCIAL LIFE :

During the Regency years, she was one of the patronesses of Almack's Assembly Rooms and, according to Captain Gronow, the most popular of them. It should be noted that Lady Cowper and most of the other patronesses at that time were young women in their 20s and not the older dowagers some readers assume them to be. They wielded enormous social influence.

1298 Dial-A-Ambulance

“Ambulance Access for All (AAA) Foundation” was set up by a group of young professionals with a high degree of social and public commitment with the primary objective of rolling out an Advanced / Basic Life Support Ambulance Service in Mumbai that is accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere at affordable prices through the easy to remember four digit telephone number 1298. The ambulance service was established to SAVE HUMAN LIVES which may otherwise have been lost for want of timely medical attention during the GOLDEN HOUR. The project was set up in association (through a formal agreement) with LONDON AMBULANCE SERVICE, a British Government Agency and the world's best ambulance service, which has provided assistance on processes, systems, protocols, training and project implementation to the AAA foundation.

The service has been operating 10 Advanced Life Support Ambulances for the last 36 months in Mumbai, serving 40-50 patients a day. All telecom operators in Mumbai have already activated the telephone number 1298. This number instantly connects callers to the control room which is live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week i.e. 24x7x365. On receiving a call, the control room immediately locates the area to be reached by using GPS (Global Positioning System) and dispatches the nearest free ambulance using a Real Time Tracking System to reach the patient / victim in the minimum possible time.

The service is a fee-based service that charges according to the capability of the patient /accident victim to pay. At present, the charges are levied on a differential basis depending on the destination hospital requested by the patient / accident victim / family. More than 80% of the calls attended from / to government hospitals to date have been done free of charge.

The service was very active in disaster management activities during the unfortunate 7/11 bomb blasts in Mumbai. The ambulances were the first to reach two of the incident scenes and they transferred a number of injured people to hospitals. The ambulance service was also active in providing medical relief to Mumbai citizens following the July ‘05 floods, distributing medicines worth over Rs. 40.00 Lacs to over 32,000 families in association with Tata Power. Ambulances were also sent on standby to Navapur during the Bird Flu breakout in early 2006. In addition, the ambulance service has successfully conducted many awareness programs in life support, first aid and emergency medical services.

AAA foundation was recently awarded the Godfrey Phillips Bravery Gold Award – 2007 for Social Act of Courage and the Times Foundation Recognition Award for life saving service in Mumbai.
