Ella Habiba Shohat is an Israeli author, activist, orator and Professor of Cultural Studies and Women's Studies at the New York University, of Iraqi Jewish heritage.[1] Ella Shohat was born in Israel to a Baghdadi family.she speaks Arabic as its spoken in Baghdad.[2] In the past she was an activist in a number of Mizrahi leftist movements. She currently lives in New York.[3] Her work includes award-winning books and numerous anthologized essays. Her writings were translated from English into French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish and German, inspiring a young generation of scholars, artists and political activists.[3]

Criticism

Her self-description of herself and other Jewish refugees from or resident in Arab lands as "Arab Jews" has been called "simply dead wrong" by an authoratative Jewish commentator.[4]

Her position "blaming Israel for the wholesale plunder of Jewish property by Arab regimes in Iraq, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Algeria, Morocco and other countries that forbade Jews to take money or possessions with them when they emigrated from or were thrown out of these places."[5] Has been called "a cynical absurdity."[6]
