Main Characters

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants, the title character of the series, is a yellow sea sponge shaped like a kitchen sponge. SpongeBob is a relentlessly optimistic character who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant, attends boating school, and hangs out with his best friend, Patrick. He enjoys karate, jelly-fishing, blowing bubbles, and often gets into a lot of mischief. SpongeBob lives in pineapple on 123 Conch Street. He is voiced by Tom Kenny.

Patrick Star

Patrick Star is a friendly starfish and SpongeBob's best friend. He and SpongeBob have apparently known each other since infancy, and they share many interests (jelly fishing, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, bubble blowing, etc.). In the episode "Rule of Dumb," it is revealed that he and SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary, are cousins. Patrick is highly unintelligent, and he often convinces SpongeBob to accompany him in dangerous or fruitless activities, such as playing near fish hooks and eating whole pumpkins. However, in the episode "The Bully," it is noted that he went to community college. In spite of the disastrous outcomes of Patrick's ideas, SpongeBob constantly attests to Patrick's genius and consults the starfish for advice and guidance. Patrick has no job or trade and spends most of his time sleeping or playing with SpongeBob. When he tries to find work, it is shown that he has little practical skill; for example in "Big Pink Loser," he struggles with tasks such as sweeping or opening a jar. Patrick lives two houses down from Spongebob under a rock at 120 Conch Street. Patrick is voiced by Bill Fagerbakke. He has also been a criminal many times in the series, like in the episodes:"Life of Crime" and "SpongeBob meets the Strangler" among others.

Squidward Tentacles

Squidward Tentacles is said to be an octopus by the creators of the SpongeBob SquarePants,[1] but refers to himself in the show as a squid.[2] He also has six appendages like some species of squid. Squidward is known in the series for his selfish and unenthused personality and belief that he is better than his undersea neighbors. Squidward generally uses two of his tentacles as arms and groups the other four into two pairs of legs. He is voiced by Rodger Bumpass.

While his neighbors SpongeBob and Patrick are generally cheerful, Squidward is very irritable and unenthusiastic. He has a dry wit, and is constantly sarcastic. He is not very popular in Bikini Bottom due to his supercilious attitude toward those he feels are "uncultured." Though he openly despises Spongebob and Patrick, they view him as a very close friend and cannot be convinced otherwise. However, it is worth noting that sometimes Squidward shows sympathy and even outright compassion towards SpongeBob. It was revealed in "The Graveyard Shift" that even with all the things he had said to Spongebob, Squidward "always sort of liked" him. Also, in the episode "Fools in April," Squidward admits to liking everything about Bikini Bottom and the "uncultured" animals that inhabit this small city. Squidward is an aspiring artist and musician (though most of his art is created in tribute to himself) and his music--his instrument of choice being the clarinet--is considered poor despite having taken fine arts classes at Bikini Bottom Community College and teaching art at the community center. He first appeared in Help Wanted

Sandy Cheeks

Sandy Cheeks is a female red squirrel from Texas. She wears a deep sea diving suit while in the ocean, only removing it when inside her large underwater home (known as the "Treedome"). She is good-natured, very strong, extremely intelligent, and possesses basic common sense, which is generally lacking in SpongeBob and Patrick. She is often depicted doing advanced mathematics, athletics, or scientific studies, but also enjoys doing karate and going to Goo Lagoon with SpongeBob. Sandy also hibernates (yet was seen awake during Christmas). Sandy is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence and first appeared in Tea at the Treedome. Over the course of the series, Sandy is shown to be something of an adrenaline addict as well as being highly competitive. She is frequently shown practicing Karate with SpongeBob and practices several extreme sports, as shown in Pre-Hibernation Week. The same episode exhibited Sandy's unusual physical strength, as she was able to pick up entire buildings in Bikini Bottom with one hand. In earlier episodes, it was implied that Spongebob had a crush on Sandy, though Spongebob hasn't shown any signs of this after the first season.

Mr. Eugene Krabs

Eugene H. Krabs, mostly referred to as Mr. Krabs, is the owner and founder of the Krusty Krab restaurant and SpongeBob and Squidward's boss. He is a crab, though his daughter Pearl is a sperm whale, a running joke. Krabs is exceptionally greedy and cheap, and on select occasions resorts to stealing to make his money. However, when pressured Krabs has been known to put his skinflint nature aside for someone else's sake. Krabs sometimes identifies himself as a sailor, most likely because of his service in the Navy and won the trophy for Manly toughness 2 times. He is voiced by Clancy Brown and first appeared in the episode "Help Wanted." He is Plankton's arch rival, although they were once friends as kids, as seen in "Friend or Foe" In the episodes "Sandy's Rocket" and "As Seen On TV," Mr. Krabs has a pet worm named Mr. Doodles.

Sheldon J. Plankton

Sheldon J. Plankton, or simply "Plankton," as he is known, is a tiny, evil, ego maniacal zooplankton and Mr. Krabs' business arch rival (although, according to the episode "Friend or Foe," they were once friends). Plankton runs a competing restaurant called the Chum Bucket (located directly across the street from the Krusty Krab). His stated goals in life are to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula from the Krusty Krab, and to rule the world. He is married to a computer "W.I.F.E." (Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph) named Karen (voiced by Jill Talley). Plankton and Karen first appear in the episode "Plankton!," in which it is revealed that he is 1% evil and 99% hot gas. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, he created bucket helmets and took over the bodies of Bikini Bottom and almost ruled the world. He stole King Neptune's crown which caused all of it. He has created many items and objects, such as Robot Mr. Krabs, a life switch machine and a high tech analyzer seen in two episodes. Plankton is voiced by Doug Lawrence.

Gary the Snail

Gary is SpongeBob's pet snail. Within the series, snails are analogous to cats, and as such Gary vocalizes like one. SpongeBob can apparently translate Gary's meows and purrs. In the episode "Rule of Dumb" he is made King of Bikini Bottom; however, this has not been mentioned since. He is also revealed to be Patrick's cousin. He has talked a few times in the series, and in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie he yells: "Meow Plankton". Gary is voiced by Tom Kenny.

Minor Characters

  • Patchy the Pirate - a non-animated character who is the President of the SpongeBob SquarePants fan club. He hosts the SpongeBob SquarePants specials and major events and is portrayed by Tom Kenny. Patchy has a pet marionette parrot named Potty who sometimes disagrees with the pirate, causing arguments. They first appeared in "Christmas Who?". Patchy resides in Encino, Los Angeles, California. (and if you watch closely, the hook on his hand and the patch on his eye occasionally switch sides.)
  • Mrs. Puff - a white porcupinefish with blonde hair and green fins. She is the teacher at her boating school, where residents of Bikini Bottom learn to drive the boat vehicles that are featured in the show. Mrs. Puff is voiced by Mary Jo Catlett and first appeared in the episode "Boating School". Mrs. Puff's husband, Mr. Puff, was captured and turned into a Pufferfish lamp. Since then, Mrs. Puff doesn't like to talk about it.
  • Larry the Lobster - a red lobster who is the lifeguard of Bikini Bottom's popular beach, Goo Lagoon. He is a bodybuilder and is sometimes seen either competing or working out. Larry first appeared in the episode "Ripped Pants" and is also good friends with Sandy and SpongeBob. He once overdosed on tanning pills, revealed in the episode Band Geeks. Larry is voiced by Mr. Lawrence.
  • Pearl Krabs - Mr. Krabs' teenage daughter and is a sperm whale. She acts like a stereotypical 16 year old girl. She is voiced by Lori Alan and first appeared in "Squeaky Boots".
  • Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy - two heroes that SpongeBob watches on his television and visits sometimes. They seem to be based on Batman and Robin. They live in the old retirement home but still seem to fight crime. Although they are human, it seems they do not need oxygen, as they have no supply. Mermaid Man is voiced by Ernest Borgnine and Barnacle Boy is voiced by Tim Conway. They first appear in the episode named after them. They seem to be the same size as all the other sea creatures in the show for some unknown reason(Although mermaid man has said that he once accidently shrunk everything using his belt, so this may be an explanation).
  • Flying Dutchman - a green, pirate ghost named after the famous ghost ship of the same name. He lives in a giant ship that floats in the underwater "sky." The Flying Dutchman escorts people to Davy Jones's Locker (which is an actual locker full of sweaty socks, because "Davy Jones works out."). This almost happened to Mr. Krabs. He is voiced by Brian Doyle-Murray and first appeared in Scaredy Pants.
  • French Narrator - the narrator speaks at the start of some episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants and does this with a heavy French accent. He is voiced by Tom Kenny. On the November 16, 2004 episode of Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Kenny admitted that Jacques Cousteau was the inspiration for the French narrator, as SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg considers Cousteau an idol. The Narrator also seems to give the impression that the series is actually a documentary being filmed in the present, due to SpongeBob saying in one episode, "I get the feeling that, somewhere, a pirate and a parrot are arguing about me. And the parrot is winning!"

Supporting characters

  • Flats is a green flounder who first appeared on the episode "The Bully." He supposedly wanted to "kick SpongeBob's butt" thoughout the whole episode, but was unable to because SpongeBob's spongy body absorbed his punch. Flats is voiced by Thomas F. Wilson.
  • Bubble Bass is a monstrously obese, picky fish who undermines Spongebob's confidence in "Pickles". He was then seen in "F.U.N." mistaking Plankton for a jelly bean, nearly eating him. He made a brief cameo in the movie.
  • Frank is a fish who was seen in "Dying for Pie". He is supposedly a friend of Squidward and is a common customer of the Krusty Krab.
  • Old Man Jenkins is an elderly fish who resides at Shady Shoals Rest Home. He used to live in the Rusty Krab before Mr. Krabs purchased it and converted it into his restaurant. He was voiced by Mr. Lawrence in "Sailor Mouth" and Tom Kenny in "My Pretty Seahorse".
  • Scooter is a surfer fish who is lavender in color. His catch phrases include "That was awwwwwsome!" and "Duuuuude." He is voiced by both Carlos Alazraqui, and Clancy Brown. In "Bubble Buddy" he seemingly dies because Bubble Buddy couldn't dig him out of the sand before high tide came. He first appeared in "Ripped Pants."
  • Harold is a fish that is a blue color with a fin in the back of his head. His name was reveled in Roller Cowards, when he flew off the Roller Coaster. He is constantly seen at the Goo Lagoon and Krusty Krab. Squidward called him a "barnacle head" for ordering food.
  • Mable is a blonde anchovy fish who has been seen in many episodes. She has four known children and has been married three times. She was once married to Tom and is the mother of Timmy.
  • Gill Gilliam is a doctor who works in the Bikini Bottom hospital.
  • Squilliam Fancyson is Squidward's successful, snooty arch rival from high school. He owns a band, as revealed in "Band Geeks". He also has a very impressive unibrow which he is proud of. He first appeared in the episode Band Geeks, and then returns in Squilliam Returns.
  • Lou has been seen working at various establishments in the Bikini Bottom community, such as an ice cream man, a balloon vendor, and a cashier at the Barg'N Mart.
  • Karen - Plankton's "computer wife", Karen. She is the brain to Sheldon J. Plankton, supplying him with plots. She irritates him most of the time. Plankton refers to her as W.I.F.E. (Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph). She was a security system when she was dating Plankton in Friend or Foe. She is voiced by Tom Kenny's wife, Jill Talley.
  • Johnny is the Realistic fish head who appears at the beginning of each show during the theme song and whenever SpongeBob is watching the news on TV. He also hosted coverage of the 21st Fry Cook Games, was the narrator of the King of Karate video in "Karate Island", and voiced the loudspeaker at the Bikini Bottom Zoo in "The Smoking Peanut". In the game SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, it is revealed his name is Johnny. His first appearance was Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II and is voiced by Mr. Lawrence.
  • Painty the Pirate is a painting of a pirate head. He sings the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song. He also appears in "Your Shoe's Untied" and "Wet Painters". He is voiced by Patrick Pinney.
  • Harold and Mrs. SquarePants - SpongeBob's parents made their debut in "Home Sweet Pineapple", where they came to pick up SpongeBob after nematodes ruined his pineapple house. Unlike SpongeBob, both his parents are more like natural sponges since they are luffa.
  • Mrs. Betsy Krabs - Mr. Krabs's mother and Pearl's grandmother. The episodes that have featured her have shown her to be very strict and no-nonsense. She is voiced by Paul Tibbitt in her first two appearances, but is voiced by Sirena Irwin in Enemy-in-Law onward.
  • Herb and Margie Star - Herb is Patrick's father who is voiced by Thomas F. Wilson. Margie is Patrick's mother who is voiced by Lori Alan. Their first and only appearance is in the episode I'm With Stupid. Patrick is nervous around his parents because they believe he is dumber than he actually is. Two confused starfish named Marty and Janet portray themselves as Patrick's parents until the end of the show, when Herb and Margie come and they realize they have no kids.
  • Perch Perkins is the TV anchorman for Bikini Bottom news. His name was revealed in the movie and he has been known to host major events at Goo Lagoon. In the movie and The Great Snail Race he is purple, but in the TV show's fourth season onward, he is orange.
  • Monroe is a little kid that is orange and yellow in color. He wears a hat with a propeller. His name is revealed in "Krabby Land". Mr. Krabs tricks the kids to buy Krabby Pattys because it is summer time and Mr. Krabs asks him his name. Then he picks up Monroe shaking him to make sure he has money.
  • Fred is a fish that has no shirt but has brown pants. He works as a janitor at Shady Shoal's, and is a common customer at the Krusty Krab. Whenever people get hurt, he usually yells, "my leg!"
  • Tom is a major Krusty Krab customer, and works as a cameraman and a mattress salesman. In "Chocolate With Nuts," it is revealed that Tom is a chocoholic, constantly yelling out "CHOCOLATE!"
  • Don the Whale is a friend of Larry the Lobster's and is also a bodybuilder. He participated in the anchor throwing contest with Larry, Sandy, and Spongebob.
  • Officer Nancy O'Malley is a purple fish with blond hair. She is a local police woman in Bikini Bottom.
