Davis Senior High School (known as Davis High School or DHS or DSHS) is the largest of three high schools located in Davis, California, in the United States. DHS is a WASC accredited, 3-year, public, comprehensive high school covering grades 10-12. The campus opened its current location in 1961. Enrollment for school year 2004-2005 was 1,831 students. The school's mascot is the Blue Devil.
Leonardo da Vinci High School is located on the Davis Senior High School campus.
Academics
Approximately 96% of Davis High School's 2004 graduates continued on to higher education, with 66% attending 4-year colleges and 30% attending 2-year colleges. The median SAT score for Davis High seniors in 2003-04 was 610 Math, 578 Verbal. Davis High offers 20 AP courses, with 80.5% of testtakers earning a passing grade of 3 or above in 2004. 14 students were named National Merit Scholar semifinalists in 2004-05.
Davis High students occasionally elect to take courses at UC Davis or the Davis center of Sacramento City College.
Davis Senior High faced a loss in funding in 2006 when less than the required 95% of students reported in for STAR testing.[1] Ironically, this underattendance has been attributed to at least in part to a number of students taking Advanced Placement Tests on a conflicting date.
Athletics
Davis High School is a member of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section's Delta Valley Conference. The school has had more team championships (91) than any other in the section.[2] DHS won five section championships in the 2006-2007 school year, in boys' and girls' cross country, girls' soccer, boys' tennis and girls' track and field.
DHS has some of the top athletic facilities in the region, with a notable exception outdoor facilities (Halden Field)[3].
Davis High's principal athletic rivals are Woodland High School, Elk Grove High School, and Jesuit High School.
Events
On May 4, 1983, Vietnamese-American student Thong Hy Huynh was stabbed to death by a white student on campus after Huynh was taunted by a group of white students.[4]
In 2007, a gay couple was voted homecoming princes for the junior class. The students campaigned together, winning the support of their high school. "This election was real and welcomed" reports the Sacramento Bee. The 16-year-old royals--Brandon Raphael and Kiernan Gatewood rode through Davis is the back of a pickup truck as part of the school's homecoming parade.[5]
