Casper/Natrona County International Airport (IATA: CPR, ICAO: KCPR, FAA LID: CPR) is a county-owned public-use airport located seven miles (11 km) northwest of the central business district of Casper, a city in Natrona County, Wyoming, United States.[2] The airport is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of 5 members each serving a 5 year term.[3] It was known as Natrona County International Airport until the airport board announced the new name on December 19, 2007.[4]

Regularly scheduled passenger service at the airport is offered by SkyWest for Delta Airlines, Pinnacle Airlines for Northwest Airlines, and Mesa Airlines or United Airlines. Also on March 30, 2008 SkyWest will be taking over two of Mesa Airlines flights to Denver, Colorado.[5] In addition occasional charter flights (know as "casino or gamblers flights") to Laughlin or Wendover, Nevada are offered.

The airport under want renovations that started in July of 2004[6] and finished in the bringing of the following year. Of course the remodel brought in everything from new carpet and paint to furniture. As part of the remodel TSA checked baggage screening was moved from in front of the ticket counters to the area behind them. In addition the rental car counters were moved to an area right next to baggage claim. Also the upper level of the gate area, once used for jet flights at the airport, was transformed into a viewing station for incoming or outgoing planes.

As reported in the Casper Star Tribune [7]the airport has been in talks with the carriers about adding more capacity there. This is due in part to a 5.8% increase in Natrona Counties population for the years 2000-2006 and a 1.8 growth rate for 2006. It looks like these talks are playing and this much wanted extra capacity is coming in part, by the use of larger aircraft. For instance on April 8, 2008 SkyWest will begin operating its Delta Connection flights to Salt Lake City using the CRJ100 aircraft, instead of the smaller EMB120. The Canadian built CRJ100 has the capacity for 50 passenger, while the the Brazilian built EMB120 has room for 30 passenger, although due to federally mandate Maximum Takeoff Weight for commuter aircraft the latter many times only carries 25 or 26 passengers.

Facilities and aircraft

Casper/Natrona County International Airport covers an area of 5,131 acres (2,076 ha) which contains four asphalt paved runways. The primary air carrier runways are 3/21 measuring 10,165 x 150 ft. (3,098 x 46 m) and 8/26 measuring 8,679 x 150 ft. (2,645 x 46 m). The general aviation runways are 17/35 measuring 7,211 x 60 ft. (2,198 x 18 m) and 12/30 measuring 6,489 x 60 ft. (1,978 x 18 m).[2]

For the 12-month period ending May 31, 2006, the airport had 47,210 aircraft operations, an average of 129 per day: 60% general aviation, 24% scheduled commercial, 14% air taxi and 1% military. There are 90 aircraft based at this airport: 51% single-engine, 34% multi-engine, 9% jet and 6% helicopter.[2]

Accidents and Incidents

  • Saturday, February 16, 2008 : A Northwest Airlink flight #3399 landed 20 minutes late after the pilot reported that the wing flaps on the plane he was operating were not working properly.[8]
  • Saturday May 18, 2007 : A United Airlines flight landed unexpectedly due to reports of smoke in the cockpit or cabin of the Boeing 757 being used for this flight.[9]
  • Saturday December 30, 2006 : A SkyWest operated United Airlines flight headed to Denver was diverted back to Casper after a report of a hydraulic systems failure.[10]
  • Thursday January 6, 2005 : A UPS Boeing 727 makes an emergency landing at the airport after reports that one of the flaps on the wings would not extend. [11]

Hertz Car Rental, Budget Rental Car, and Avis Rent A Car System offer vehicles for rent at the airport. In addition RC Cab and Casper Cab offer taxi service to and from the airport. Also a few of the local hotels offer free shuttle service to and from the airport and their properties.

Passenger Services

Passenger services at the airport includes a Subway Sandwich Shop, as well as a kiosk operated by First Street Bakers, a local downtown bakery. There is also a gift shop and an aircraft viewing area located on the second floor of the airport, just above the gate area. In addition also offers its passengers free wi-fi internet service.
