Ella Habiba Shohat is an Israeli author, activist, orator and Professor of Cultural Studies and Women's Studies at the New York University, of Iraqi Jewish heritage.[1] Ella Shohat was born in Israel to a Baghdadi family.she speaks Arabic as its spoken in Baghdad.[2] In the past she was an activist in a number of Mizrahi leftist movements. She currently lives in New York.[3] Her work includes award-winning books and numerous anthologized essays. Her writings were translated from English into French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish and German, inspiring a young generation of scholars, artists and political activists.[3]

Criticism

Her self-identification as an "Arab Jew" has been questioned, and her position that "the same historical process that dispossessed Palestinians of their property, lands and national-political rights was linked to the dispossession of Middle Eastern and North African Jews of their property, lands, and rootedness in Muslim countries" described as "a cynical absurdity."[4]
