Raphoe
Template:Infobox Irish Place Raphoe (Irish: Ráth Bhoth) is a town in eastern County Donegal, part of the Province of Ulster in Ireland. It is the main town in the Laggan Valley, a district with very fertile land in East Donegal. It is said to have the second highest elevation of any Irish town; and it has a living tree growing, with little protection, in the middle of the main street.
Raphoe has come under the media spotlight recently after alleged attempts by the Garda Síochána to frame a local publican, Frankie McBrearty, for the murder of cattle dealer Richie Barron. [1]
Places of interest
- The Anglican Cathedral, a semi ruined Bishop's palace, and a nearby ring of sixty-eight standing stones (the Beltany Stone Circle [2])are worthy of a sight-seeing visit.
Religion
Unusually for the Republic of Ireland, it has a majority Presbyterian population. Conversely, however the Roman Catholic Diocese for Donegal is the Diocese of Raphoe.
