Thriller 25 is a 25th Anniversary edition of Thriller by Michael Jackson, the world's best-selling album.[3] It was released internationally on February 11, 2008 and the following day in the United States.[4] Thriller 25 was released on Sony BMG's re-issue division, Legacy Recordings, who released Thriller Special Edition in 2001. In the UK, the BBFC awarded Thriller 25 a "15" certificate because of the "Thriller" music video. It is the first Jackson album with an age certificate.

History

Jackson first mentioned a "second chapter" of Thriller on Access Hollywood in late 2006, and Jackson served as executive producer[5] and Epic announced it in a press release on November 30, 2007.[6][7]

To promote Thriller 25, a new website was set up for Jackson[8] along with accounts on networking websites like MySpace and Facebook.[9][10] Jackson was the 33rd most viewed artist on YouTube, the additional marketing helped push him up to 21st in January[11] and February 3, a Pepsi ad with supermodel Naomi Campbell dancing to "Thriller" aired during Super Bowl XLII to over 95 million Americans, and again at the Grammys on February 10.[12][13] Odeon Cinemas around the UK ran free "Thriller" viewings on February 8 and February 9[14] while a launch party was held at HMV in London.[15] Thirty second television adverts coinciding with the release date aired throughout Europe in places such as the UK and Spain.[16][17] A forty episode podcast series about people's first Thriller experience available on Jackson's website,[18] "Thrillercast", will run throughout 2008 and features various celebrities.[19]

Internationally, "The Girl Is Mine 2008" was released as a downloadable single on January 14[20] and on CD on January 25.[21] In the United Kingdom the CD release was pushed back to February 4.[22] In the United States, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" was the first single released on January 23.[23][24] "The Girl Is Mine 2008" reached # 5 in Japan and Mexico, #6 in the Netherlands, #7 on the United World Airplay Chart, #21 Germany, #22 France, #23 in Europe, #32 in the UK, #76 in Canada and #93 on the World Chart.[25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" reached #3 in Sweden, #4 in New Zealand, #8 in Australia, #32 in Canada, #69 in the UK, #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, #87 on the United World Chart and #100 in Europe.[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] On March 21, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008" will see its physical release in Europe.[43] These are Jackson's first singles since "One More Chance" in 2003.

Album track "Beat It 2008" began charting, reaching #26 in Switzerland, #31 in Denmark, #43 in Sweden, #74 in Germany and #77 in Canada[44][45][46][47][48] as did "Billie Jean 2008", reaching #91 in Germany.[49] Unusual for Jackson, no music videos have been released yet.

Thriller 25 comes in CD and vinyl format with seven bonus tracks[50]: A new Thriller-era song, "For All Time"[51], Vincent Price's voice-over and five remixes featuring contemporary artists like Fergie and Akon.[52][53] It also includes a DVD and booklet. The booklet contains a message from Jackson[5] and the DVD includes four award-winning music videos: "Thriller", "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and Jackson's Emmy-nominated Motown 25 performance of "Billie Jean", famous Jackson's moonwalk.[53] The ballad "For All Time" was supposedly recorded in 1982, but may date from the Dangerous sessions in 1991 because leaks often credit it as Dangerous era.[54]Though the original vocals were used, new ones were too.

On the iTunes Store, Zune Marketplace, and Amazon MP3, a "Super Deluxe Edition" can be purchased which features the bonus material from "Thriller Special Edition", "Billie Jean (Underground Mix)", an instrumental "Thriller" mix, an extended "Billie Jean" and a digital booklet is available. While copies bought in Target, Best Buy and Circuit City feature the bonus tracks "Billie Jean (1982 Club Mix)", "Thriller (1982 Def Remix)" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (1982 Dance Mix)" respectively.[55] Sony also released a "fan pack" containing "Thriller 25" and the Number Ones DVD .[56]
