2008 NFL draft
The 2008 NFL Draft is scheduled to take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on April 26 and April 27 2008. For the 29th consecutive year, ESPN has the rights to televise the draft; the NFL Network will also broadcast the event, its third year doing so. Of the 253 selections, 221 are regular selections in rounds one through seven, and 32 are compensatory selections, distributed among rounds three through seven. ("Selection" is the official NFL term, although the more commonly-used term is "picks.") This will be the second draft presided over by current NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Changes for 2008
The draft will mark the official debut of a new NFL shield logo,[1] replacing the old shield logo which had been used since 1970.
The new logo will not be the only change at the 2008 Draft. Only two rounds will take place during the first day, changing from three in previous years. The draft will also start at 3:00 p.m. US EDT, after starting at noon in previous years. Limits in the amount of time a team has to make a selection have also changed: the first round has been reduced from fifteen minutes to ten, and the second round was reduced from ten minutes to seven. The second day will begin at 10:00 a.m. US EDT, for the remaining five rounds with no changes to the five-minute selection time limit.[2]
Determining the draft order
The draft order is generally based on each team's regular season record, as follows:
- The winners of Super Bowl XLII are given the last selection, and the losers the second to last selection.[3]
- Remaining teams are sorted by regular season record, with worse records picking first, regardless of playoff status. This is why the Cleveland Browns, who finished 10-6 but did not make the playoffs, will pick after the Washington Redskins, who finished 9-7, but did make the playoffs.
- For teams with the same record, teams that fail to make the playoffs always pick before teams that earned playoff berths. This is why the Browns will pick before the Seattle Seahawks.
- For teams that failed to make the playoffs, remaining ties are broken by strength of schedule. (In the NFL, a team's strength of schedule is the combined records of its 16 opponents, including games played against the team in question, and counting divisional opponents twice. Because of this, each team's opponents' combined wins and losses will add up to 256, so a team whose opponents had more combined wins has a better strength of schedule. For draft order, a lower strength of schedule results in an earlier pick.) If strength of schedule does not resolve a tie, division and/or conference tiebreakers may be used. If the tie still cannot be broken, a coin toss at the NFL Combine is used to determine draft order.
- For teams that make the playoffs, ties are broken by the order in which teams lost in the playoffs. If teams lost in the same round, strength of schedule is applied.
The table below is divided into "segments" (the official term for teams tied at the same record). In subsequent rounds, the picks will cycle within each segment, the relative order remaining the same as it did in the first round. For example, in the 8-8 segment, the order for the second round is Minnesota, Houston, Philadelphia, and then Arizona.
Current overall draft order (as of 2008-02-22) Please note this table does not give the actual current order of the first round; see below for that list.

3 | Atlanta Falcons | 4-12 | .516 | At the NFL Combine, Atlanta won a coin toss against Oakland, so Atlanta receives the #3 selection.[4] |
4 | Oakland Raiders | 4-12 | .516 | Oakland must pick before Kansas City in the first round because Oakland finished behind Kansas City in the AFC West (based on record against common opponents).[5] |
5 | Kansas City Chiefs | 4-12 | .516

7 | San Francisco 49ers | 5-11 | .465

23 | Pittsburgh Steelers | 10-6 | .453
24 | Tennessee Titans | 10-6 | .500
25 | Seattle Seahawks | 10-6 | .414

The San Francisco 49ers traded their first-round selection in 2008 to the New England Patriots, as well as the 110th overall selection in 2007 (traded to the Oakland Raiders for Randy Moss, used to select John Bowie) in exchange for the 28th overall selection in 2007 (used to select Joe Staley).[7]
- Colts to 49ers. The Indianapolis Colts traded their first-round selection in 2008 to San Francisco, as well as the 126th overall selection in 2007 (used to select Dashon Goldson) in exchange for the 42nd overall selection in 2007 (used to select Tony Ugoh).[7]

- Browns to Packers. The Cleveland Browns traded their second-round selection in 2008 to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for Corey Williams.[9]
- Chargers to Dolphins. The San Diego Chargers traded their second-round selection in 2008 to the Miami Dolphins for Chris Chambers.[10]
Third round
- Jets to Panthers. The New York Jets traded their third-round selection (#67 overall) along with their fifth-round selection to the Carolina Panthers in a deal that sent Kris Jenkins to New York.[11]
- Chargers to Bears. San Diego traded their third-round selection in 2008 to the Chicago Bears, as well as the 62nd, 93rd, and 167th overall selections in 2007 (used to select Dan Bazuin, Garrett Wolfe and Kevin Payne, respectively) in exchange for the 37th overall selection in 2007 (used to select Eric Weddle).[7]
- Raiders to Patriots. The Oakland Raiders traded their third-round selection in 2008 to New England, as well as the 211th overall selection in 2007 (used to select Oscar Lua) in exchange for the 91st overall selection in 2007 (used to select Mario Henderson).[12]

- Bills to Jaguars The Buffalo Bills traded a 3rd and 5th round selection to the Jacksonville Jaguars in return for DT Marcus Stroud.[15]
Fourth round
- Redskins to Broncos. The Washington Redskins traded their fourth-round selection in 2008, and their third-round selection in 2007 (used to select Ryan Harris) to the Denver Broncos as part of a three-team trade in which Washington received T.J. Duckett and Atlanta received Ashley Lelie. (This was the result of a formula which could have had Denver and Washington swapping 2007 first-round selections.)[16]
- Saints to Jets. The Saints traded their fourth-round selection in 2008 to the Jets, for Jonathan Vilma.
Fifth round
- Jets to Panthers. The New York Jets traded their third-round and fifth-round selections to the Carolina Panthers in a deal that sent Kris Jenkins to New York.
- Dolphins to Chiefs. Miami (conditionally) traded its fifth-round selection in 2008 to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Trent Green. The selection would have become a fourth-round selection if Green had met certain performance criteria.[17]
- Bears to Bills. Chicago (conditionally) traded their fifth-round selection in 2008 to Buffalo in exchange for Darwin Walker. The round of the selection may change, depending on Walker's playing time.[18]
- Panthers to Bears. The Carolina Panthers traded their fifth-round selection in 2008 to Chicago in exchange for Chris Harris.[19]
- Raiders to Broncos. Oakland (conditionally) traded their fifth-round selection in 2008 to Denver in exchange for Gerard Warren.[20]
- Bills to Jaguars The Buffalo Bills traded a 3rd and 5th round selection to the Jacksonville Jaguars in return for DT Marcus Stroud.[21]
Sixth round
- Seahawks to Browns. The Seattle Seahawks traded their sixth-round selection in 2008 to Cleveland in exchange for Charlie Frye.[22]
- Packers to Giants. The Green Bay Packers traded their sixth-round selection in 2008 to the New York Giants in exchange for running back Ryan Grant.[23]
- Broncos to Rams. Denver traded their sixth-round selection in 2008 to the St. Louis Rams for defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy.[24] The trade occurred after the Broncos had tried to trade the same pick to Miami for defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson; that trade was voided.[25]
- Browns to Eagles. Cleveland traded their sixth-round selection in 2008 to Philadelphia for center Hank Fraley. The trade was conditional on games started by Fraley, and could have fallen to a seventh-round pick, but Fraley started all 16 games.[26]
- Cowboys/Dolphins swap. The teams swapped their sixth-round selections in a trade involving Jason Ferguson.[27]
- Jaguars to Vikings. Jacksonville traded their sixth-round selection for Troy Williamson.[28]
Seventh round

Undisclosed picks
- Titans to Seahawks. The Tennessee Titans traded an undisclosed draft pick in 2008 (which may be 2008 6th round draft pick because Seattle has a Round6;Pick23 in the 2008 NFL Draft) to Seattle for defensive end Bryce Fisher.[36]
- Buccaneers to Chiefs. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded two different undisclosed draft picks for 2008 to Kansas City for nose tackle Ryan Sims and running back Michael Bennett.[37][38]
- Buccaneers to Broncos. Tampa Bay traded a conditional 2008 draft pick to Denver for the rights to quarterback Jake Plummer. If Plummer, who is currently retired, reports to the Buccaneers before the first pick of the 2008 draft is made, Tampa Bay will send the Broncos their fourth-round selection. Otherwise, Denver will receive Tampa's seventh-round selection.[39]
- Redskins to Jets. Washington traded a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 to the New York Jets for Pete Kendall. If Kendall played more than 80% of the Redskins' snaps in 2007, the Jets would instead receive a fourth-round pick in 2009.[40]
Picks forfeited
- Patriots first-round pick. As penalty for videotaping defensive signals in their season opener against the Jets, the Patriots forfeited their first-round pick since they qualified for the playoffs; they would have lost their second- and third-round picks if they had not. (The pick acquired from the 49ers will not be affected.)
- Chargers fourth-round pick. San Diego used this pick in the 2007 Supplemental Draft to select Paul Oliver.
- Ravens fifth-round pick. Baltimore used this pick in the 2007 Supplemental Draft to select Jared Gaither.
