Final Destination 3 is a 2006 supernatural thriller, and the third film in the Final Destination series. Distributed by New Line Cinema, the film was directed and written by James Wong, who co-wrote the original. It was produced by Craig Perry. The film was originally scheduled for release date on February 24, 2006; however, the date was altered to February 10, two weeks earlier.

Plot

Wendy Christensen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has a premonition of a horrible roller coaster accident. Before it happens, she warns her friends to leave the coaster, which they do.

After they get off, the roller coaster crashes just like in her premonition. Wendy then teams up with her friend, Kevin Fischer (Ryan Merriman) as well as Erin (Alexz Johnson) and Ian (Kris Lemche) to try to cheat death.

Cast and characters

Wendy is a photographer for the yearbook. She is described in the film as a control freak, and unsettled by the roller-coaster. She then has a premonition of its derailment, which leads to saving several of her classmates. She sat next to Kevin in the roller-coaster. She is supposed to be the last person to die in the accident and in Death's list. She tries to save the kids left alive by using some photos that she took that night.

Kevin is the class clown. He was sitting next to Wendy in the roller-coaster. He would be the 15th person to die in the accident and the ninth on Death's list. He helps Wendy try to save the survivors.

Erin is a stereotypical Goth and class freak. Ian is her boyfriend, and they sat together on the coaster. She is supposed to be the 12th person to die on the roller-coaster, and on Death's list she would be the sixth to die. She dies when a Nail-gun that she falls onto shoots through her head and nails her hand to her face.

Ian is sarcastic and dresses in a stereotypical Goth style. Erin is his girlfriend, and they sat together on the roller-coaster. Ian is supposed to be the 11th person to die, and on Death's list he would be the fifth to die, but Kevin saved him and he ultimately died seventh when a sign fell on him, cutting him in half.

Lewis is an athlete at the high school. He was sitting alone on the coaster. He would be the 10th person to die on the coaster, and the fourth person to die on Death's list. He doesn't believe that Death is chasing them, which leads to his death when 2 swords cut through the safety wire on his weight machine, leading to the weights crushing his head.

Franklin Cheeks is a graduate that still goes to high school events to video tape girls. He gets on the roller-coaster behind Ashley and Ashlyn. Nobody was sitting next to him. He would be the 9th to die on the roller coaster, and the third one on Death's list when a lorry hits the back of Kevins car, sending the engine, and the still-spinning fanbelt, into the back of his head.

Ashley is the typical blonde, that cares too much about her looks. She was sitting next to Ashlyn on the roller-coaster. She would be the eighth person to die on the roller-coaster, and the second to die on Death's list. She dies with Ashlyn when the sunbeds are in malfunction.

Ashlyn is the stereotypical Beauty Queen and mean girl. She was sitting next to Ashley on the roller-coaster. She´s supposed to be seventh person to die on the roller coaster, and the first to die on Death's list. She dies with Ashley when the sunbeds are in malfunction.

Julie is Wendy's sister. She is not a Senior like the others, but she was on the ride, next to her friend, Perry. She would be the 13th person to die on the roller-coaster, and the seventh person on Death's list. Death skipped her after she was saved by Wendy and Kevin.

Perry is one of Julie's friends. She would be the 14th person to die on the roller-coaster, and eighth to die on Death's list when a flagpole impales her.

Amber is another of Julie's friends. She does not ride the roller coaster, and therefore is not marked for death.

Jason is Wendy´s boyfriend. He is sitting in the front seat next to Carrie, and dies in the derailment.

Carrie is Kevin's girlfriend. She is sitting in the front seat next to Jason, and dies in the derailment.

Deaths

Original Design

Originally in the death lineup, the order was: Ashlyn, Ashley, Frank, Lewis, Ian, Erin, Julie, Perry, Kevin and then Wendy.

Actual Deaths

Ashley Freund and Ashlyn Halperin:Death by incineration.

Ashley and Ashlyn decide that they should get a tan for graduation. Ashley brings her slurpee into the room with them, against rules, and the two lay down in their tanning beds. Meanwhile, Wendy discovers something weird involving Ashley and Ashlyn’s picture, and she attempts to phone them. Ashley’s slurpee drips water down into the heater controlling the tanning beds, slowly causing the temperature to rise. The air vent which comes on because of the heater controller causes the coat hanger to topple over into a plant which topples into the loosened CD rack. The CD rack falls onto Ashley’s bed. As she pushes her door open, the CD rack slides into the handle of Ashlyn’s tanning bed, and as Ashlyn lifts her door, the other side locks in place in the handle of Ashley’s door handle, locking the two doors shut. As the temperature continues to rise, the lamps in the tanning beds begin to burst, and the girls slowly are burnt alive. Soon enough, the two are engulfed in flames, and they die while the tanning beds begin to melt and the painting behind them catches fire.

  • Clues/ Notes: Ashley and Ashlyn’s picture hint at their death. In it, they are playing a water gun game. A red light from a ride behind them (The One-Eighty) is flashing, distorting the picture with a red wave of light, making it look like Ashley and Ashlyn were on fire.
  • It is strange that both of them have "Ash" in their names.
  • During the opening of the movie, a picture for a sideshow act called the "Electric Sisters", two females appearing to be electrocuted while laying down, are shown.
  • When Ashlyn takes protective goggles from a jar filled with liquid, the jar says, "Sterile Goggles-Caution. Alcohol is Flammable.
  • The song, "Love Rollercoaster" by The Ohio Players is the song the two girls are listening to as they tan. It is ironic because they were originally meant to die on a rollercoaster.
  • As Wendy tries to contact Ashley on her cell phone, the light bulb inside the lamp next to the computer explodes suddenly, just like the bulbs in the tanning booths that begin exploding.

Frank Cheek:Death by head trauma.

While in a drive-thru, Frank gets killed when a runaway truck speeds down a hill, turning right into the drive-thru and smashing full-force into Kevin's truck which is right behind Frankie's convertible. The momentum causes the engine of Kevin's truck to shoot out. The motor fan detaches itself and is sent spinning forwards into Frank's convertible. Frank's head is whiplashed backwards into the still spinning motor fan blades, decapitating him.

  • Clues/ Notes: Frank’s picture hints at his death. In it, a fan is hanging over his head, and due to the distortion of the picture, it looks as if the blades are cutting into his neck.
  • As Wendy and Kevin look at the electronic menu, the word "control" flickers out. Throughout the film, following the coaster crash, Wendy feels as if she's losing control of the situation.
  • Just before the large truck smashes into Kevin's truck, his radio begins playing "Turn Around, Look at Me" by The Letterman. As they turn around, they finally notice the runaway truck rolling down the hill at them.

Lewis Romero:Death by crushing, head trauma.

While lifting dumbbells at the gym, Lewis is killed when he slips on some spilled energy drink, dropping the two dumbbells. He trips over one of them and falls backwards. His head lands on the poorly locked weights of the leg press he'd been using earlier. The second dumbbell hits the lock of the machine, causing it to snap, and the weights plummet down on Lewis’ head, crushing it like a water balloon.

  • Clues/ Notes: Lewis’ picture hints at his death. In it, he is hunched down at the strong-man game. He has just hit the plank, and the weight is zooming to the top of the bar, but due to distortion, it looks as if it may be coming down. Lewis' head is not visible as he is bent over from behind.
  • Just as Lewis' head is crushed, Wendy looks down at his iPod, taking note of the song that is playing: "Lose Control" by Missy Elliot. Throughout the book, following the coaster crash, Wendy feels as if she's losing control of the situation.
  • The weights weigh 1080 pounds. If you take the first "0" out of the weight number, it reads "180"-the flight number of the plane in the original Final Destination.

Erin Ulmer:Death by impalement, head trauma.

As several boards and debris topple down from the shelves on Ian, Kevin, and Wendy, one of the sharp stakes is sent spinning at the sawdust bag, popping it and spraying the sawdust into Erin’s eyes. As she falls backwards over the forklift, the back of her head hits the nozzle of a hydraulic nail gun, which pumps a dozen nails through Erin’s cheeks, chin, and lips. Her left hand is also pinned to her face by different nails that stick through her palm, and one of the nails also manages to shoot straight outwards of her open eye, deflating it as she slowly dies.

  • Clues/ Notes: Erin’s picture hints at her death. In it, she is holding an air rifle from the shooting range and her hand is over her face like it was when she dies.
  • Prior to the accident, Kevin took notice of a NIN (Nine Inch Nails) sticker on Ian's car.
  • During the opening of the movie, a poster for a sideshow act called "The Nail Woman", a female with nails appearing out of her hands, nose, and mouth, is shown. Her hand in the poster is also positioned similarly to how Erin's hand is stuck to her face due to the nails.
  • Prior to the accident, Erin's talking to someone on a phone, referring to a customer as a pinhead, referring to the nails that impale the back of her head.
  • Erin was supposed to die after Ian, but he was intervened from the falling wooden stakes.

Perry Malinowski:Death by impalement

Seconds after Julie is almost impaled on the rusty wheat-thresher, the horse who was dragging her breaks free of the flagpole it was tied to. The flagpole springs backwards like a bow and launches forwards out of the ground with the flag wavering behind it, spearing through the air before impaling Perry from behind, jabbing through her back and out from her chest. The brass eagle at the tip of the flag pole erupts from her sternum, coated with lung tissue and blood, which soak through the flag that is sticking out from behind her.

  • Clues/ Notes: Perry’s picture hints at her death. In it, she is wearing a t-shirt with an American eagle and a flag on it; the flag she was speared with had an eagle decoration on it.
  • The flag that killed Perry read "Liberty or Death".
  • Perry was supposed to die after Julie, but she was intervened after being dragged along by a runaway horse and almost dragged into a wheat thresher. Kevin cut the rope just before then, skipping Julie.
  • In Julie's picture, she is wearing a t-shirt with a silhouette of a rearing horse on it.

Ian McKinley: Death by crushing, dismemberment.

Ian is killed shortly after the stray fireworks shoot at Wendy, Kevin, and Julie. As the three of them duck, all four fireworks zoom up to meet Ian, but swerve upwards together at the last second, leaving Ian stunned. The four fireworks land together at the base of the cherry picker behind Ian, and as they explode together, they sever a cord that holds the basket at the top. The cherry picker basket then plunges straight downwards. Ian looks up in time to cross his arms in an X in a weak defense before he is pile-driven into the soft earth. Blood pools up from under the basket as the McKinley sign flutters down and rests on Ian's arm, marking his grave.

  • Clues/Notes: Ian's picture hints at what was his intended death. He is pointing upward to a KILL sign. Wendy looks up and notices a box of stakes that are about to fall. However, he is intervened and later dies from crushing.
  • In the premonition, Ian falls off the roaster coaster after he loses his grip. Later, a sign falls on him.

Julie Christensen, Kevin Fischer, and Wendy Christensen: Death by blunt force trauma, obliteration

During the subway derailment, Julie is hit by a thrown train wheel, killing her immediately. Shorty after, Kevin is thrown to a window. It slowly cracks and breaks, sending him out of the train. He then dies of obliteration. After the derailment, Wendy awakens as the sole survivor. However, her moment of peace is cut short when another subway arrives and hits her. This is all in a premonition but there is a strong possibility this is their fate since the subway doors closed before they could leave.

  • Clues/Notes: Kevin's picture suggested his death should have been the fireworks. There is a flash on his face. However, Wendy saves him before he could be hit. During the subway derailment, sparks are everywhere
  • The original vision had everyone die in a roller coaster derailment. Wendy, Kevin, and Julie all die in a subway derailment.
  • Before his death, Ian repeatedly shouted, "You're dead."
  • The train's number is 081, but when Wendy looks at a security mirror, it reads 180 -which was the plane number in the original Final Destination.

Alternate Deaths

In the DVD, you can change some of the scenes to the deleted scenes.

  • At the beginning, if you choose Tails, the end of Wendy's premonition occurs just as Kevin is flipping the coin. She grabs it and runs off, with Jason, Kevin, and Carrie following her. Everyone except them that were saved from the rollercoaster accident in the original movie are killed. It is then explained what happened to Wendy, Jason, Kevin, and Carrie afterward. This marks the first of the three alternate endings available on the DVD.
  • Ashley and Ashlyn's death can be changed. If you choose 76 degrees, Ashlyn gets out of the tanning bed earlier, causing the CD rack to fall and knock her out, but still locks Ashley in her tanning booth. Ashlyn eventually helps Ashley out, but the bottom of the booth breaks, electrocuting both of them.
  • Frank's death can be changed. If you choose to honk again, Wendy and Kevin discover that it's Frank in the car. After breaking out of the truck, Kevin grabs Frank and pulls him out of the way, skipping him.
  • Lewis' death can be changed. If you choose to look at the picture again, Lewis' head is crushed as soon as Kevin and Wendy arrive at the gym.
  • Erin's death can be changed. If you choose Ian not to shoot the bird with the nail gun, Erin's death would not be caused by the sandbag but the birds who are scared by the wooden stakes flap their wings and cause her to fall back on the nail gun.
  • Ian's death can be changed. If you choose to jump right, Ian is completely pile-driven into the ground. Wendy throws away her camera, and she and her sister help Kevin. As they walk away, the camera suddenly turns on and takes a picture of the three, possibly to show that they're still marked for death. This marks the second alternate ending of the three available on the DVD.
  • The end of the movie can be changed. If you choose to look at the map more, Wendy notices the "End of the Line" section. The rest of the movie plays through the same as the original until the end. Instead of the entire incident turning out to be a premonition, it's real, and the train hits Wendy. This marks the third and final alternate ending of the three available on the DVD.

Rating

Final Destination 3 was rated R by the MPAA for strong horror violence/gore, language, and some nudity. It received a 15 certificate for the same reasons in the United Kingdom. In Germany, it received an 18 certificate, in contrast to the 16 received by the first two installments, due to the increased relative intensity of violence and gore.

Response

Final Destination 3 was successful both on film and DVD. The film was released in the United States on February 10, 2006, and opened at #2, showing across 2,880 screens with an opening weekend slightly under $20 million U.S. dollars averaging to a little under $6,940 per theater. As of April 16, 2006, FD3 had made $54,098,051 stateside, though the movie continued to screen across the country for another seven weeks after domestic tallies closed. The film grossed even more in foreign markets, raking in over $59 million as of Early August. Worldwide recorded gross has now reached approx. $113,270,000 so far, outperforming both the original and first sequel in the series. As of late October 2006, Japan gross tallies have yet to be calculated. The DVD rentals reached nearly $45 million, making FD3 the longest running video in the top 50 chart of October 29 (boxofficemojo) and the 4th best grosser of the 50 films on the list.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film was rated at 46%.[1] The original two films received equally poor scores. Besides deriding the film for the high level of violence and the reference to the attacks on the World Trade Center in September 2001, a common complaint directed at the film was that it failed to offer anything new. The BBC awarded a rare 1 star out of 5[2], after awarding the first installment four stars and the second three.
