James Barber (1923November 29, 2007) was the Canadian cooking show host of the Urban Peasant.

Born in the United Kingdom, he formerly worked as an engineer before becoming a food critic for the Vancouver Sun. His lifelong interest in food and writing and his increased knowledge naturally led him to become a cookbook author. Following his retirement, he spent his remaining years on his farm in British Columbia's Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island.

James was a complicated man - a large personality who did everything with energy and passion. He will be long remembered for empowering others to do things themselves. James died peacefully at the farm of natural causes He was sitting at the dining room table reading a cookbook with a pot of chicken soup was simmering on the stove. That's the way he would have wanted it.

James was married to his long-time partner, Christina Burridge. He is also survived by five children, four by his first wife, Jean Barber-Grant, (Patrick & John Barber, and Gregory and Alexandra Grant) and a later child, Alexis Persyko.
