Sarah Onyango Obama is the paternal step-grandmother of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama. She lives in Kogela village, 40 miles north of western Kenya's main town, Kisumu, on the edge of Lake Victoria.[1]. Her small farmhouse has no television, no telephone, no electricity, and no running water. [2] [3]
Sarah Obama was the third wife of Obama's paternal grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama. Although not a blood relation, Barack Obama nevertheless calls her "Mama Sarah", since she had a major role in raising his father.[4]
Sarah Obama was just 16 when she married Obama's grandfather, an older man who was her father's friend. Arranged marriages and obedience to husbands -- enforced by beatings, if necessary -- were the plight of Kenyan women of her generation, she explained in Obama's book.[2]
Barack Obama's father, Barack Obama, Sr., died in a car accident in 1982.[5]
Sarah Obama recently publicly complained about the false reports that Senator Obama is a Muslim. She says that he is a Christian, just as she is.[6]. She has been frequently interviewed by the European press, such as in this clip taken in her home.[7] and she closely follows the political campaign.[8]
