Clifton, Virginia

Clifton is a town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 185. Though in 2003 a new community Clifton Heights was made in Clifton rising to population to about 210. Currently the town is around 300 feet about sea level.

History

1600s and 1700s

Clifton, Virginia was mainly known as a plantation through out the 1700s. Before then Native Americans used the current town area as hunting grounds.

1800s

Like most plantations in the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, the cought fire and burned. Around the 1840s the first few homes were built. Clifton was near the Battle of Mannassas and during that specific time was known as Devereux Station. After the Civil War, in 1868 Devereux Station, Virginia became known has Clifton Station. That next year in 1869 a post office was set up in the town in what orginal was a junction and a railroad. Then during the 1880s and 1890s about 15 homes were set up in the town.

1900s

To start off the 20th Century, in 1902, the General Assembly established a charter on March 9, 1902, practicly about 28 years before the Clifton Store cought fire. During the 1900s the town was practiclly at its modern day size. Except that the first ever schoolhouse was built on a 100 foot hill overlooking the heart of Clifton. In 1930 the Clifton General Store cought fire on March 9, 1930 and a few months later a new general store was built in its place. In the 1940s, two homes were built. And to finish the main town off the Clifton Creek House was renovated in 1993.

Today Clifton has been known now for its major annual events. In 2002 a new community was built on the edge of town in what some people nickname Froggyburg.

Geography

Clifton is located at 38°46'48" North, 77°23'11" West (38.780047, -77.386408)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. In reality, however, the town of Clifton is by definition one square mile. Popes Head Creek runs through the Town.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 185 people, 67 households, and 52 families residing in the town. The population density is 274.7/km² (723.7/mi²). There are 70 housing units at an average density of 104.0/km² (273.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.92% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 67 households out of which 40.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.7% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% are non-families. 13.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 32.4% from 45 to 64, and 4.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 134.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 125.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $111,048, and the median income for a family is $117,446. Males have a median income of $62,188 versus $47,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $47,459. 0.0% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line.

Education

Clifton currently hosts one elementary school, that being Clifton Elementary [1]. The town does not contain any intermediate schools, high schools, colleges, or universities.
