Born Herbert Arthur Chamberlayne Blyth, Maurice Barrymore (18491905) was the forefather of the Barrymore family of American actors.

He was born in India and educated in England, took the stage name of Maurice Barrymore. He married actress Georgianna "Georgie" Emma Drew, herself from a stage family.

Maurice and Georgie had three famous children, all renowned actors:

Sometime before 1878 he and a fellow actor were shot by a railroad employee called Jim Currie (who later shared a cell with the accused killer of Diamond Bessie). Maurice was injured but the other actor was killed.
