Founded in 1979, the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) is a 501(c)3 international, educational association made up of over 10,000 individuals with an interest in academic advising in the U.S., Canada, and around the world. NACADA draws members from more than 1,700 institutions and from all areas of college life; they include faculty, professional advisors, graduate students, student support personnel, peer advisors, and administrators. It is the premier organization in the world geared towards serving staff and faculty who provide academic advising to post-secondary students. NACADA is a member of the American Council on Education, the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS)[1], and maintains a partnership with the National Collegiate Athletic Association to further student-athlete development and academic success [2]
Academic advisors enhance their knowledge, skills, and professional development through a variety of NACADA-sponsored opportunities including: conferences, institutes, scholarships,[3] Web-based resources and seminars, Commission and Interest Groups, research-based publications, a speaker and consultants’ service, and an awards program. Online masters degree and graduate certificate programs are offered in conjunction with Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas where the executive office has been housed since 1990.[4] NACADA will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2009.
In addition, NACADA offers a comprehensive clearinghouse on topics of interest to the entire higher education community. This service is available to members and non-members and features resources related to all aspects of student development gleaned from individual members and institutions. Over 70 separate topics are featured, each representing multiple listings.
