Location

Sanjurge is located 6 km/3.7 miles from Chaves, Portugal, the main city of that region. It is also about 15 minutes from the Spain and Portugal Border.

The Village Itself

Most people who live in Sanjurge are all older men and women because a lot of its population immigrated to the United States and France in the early 1980's. The majority of Sanjurge's inhabitants cultivate their own fruits and vegetables, raise their own ducks and chickens and go into the main city to buy the rest of their everyday needs. There are two coffee shops and a bar located in the center of this small village. There is also a one classroom school and recreation center a block or two from the center of the village.

Specialties

Sanjurge, and its surrounding areas are known for their Presunto or smoked ham and their Folar a type of bread with different kinds of meat in it.
