Ella Habiba Shohat is an Israeli[citation needed] author, activist, orator and Professor of Cultural Studies and Women's Studies at New York University. She is of Iraqi Jewish descent.[1] Ella Shohat was born in Israel to a Baghdadi family. In the past she was an activist in a number of Mizrahi leftist movements. She currently lives in New York.[2] Her work includes award-winning books and numerous anthologized essays. Her writings were translated from English into French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish and German, inspiring a young generation of scholars, artists and political activists.[2]
