Lafayette Township is one of the twenty-two townships of Coshocton County, Ohio, United States. Named to honor General Lafayette, a French military hero who fought with and significantly aided the American Army during the American Revolutionary War (initially Marquis de Lafayette until June 1790, when he permanently renounced both the nobility and aristocratic title[1]).
The 2000 census found 4,285 people in the township, 1,972 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township.[2]

Located in the southeastern part of the county, it borders the following townships:

The village of West Lafayette is located in northeastern Lafayette Township.

Name and history

Statewide, the only other Lafayette Township is located in Medina County.

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township clerk, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the clerkship or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
