Macross Frontier (マクロスF, Makurosu Furontia) is a TV anime series, set in the Macross universe. Animated by Satelight, it premiered Japan on MBS on April 3, 2008. A pre-broadcast airing, called Macross Frontier Deculture Edition or Macross Special Edition (マクロスSP版, Makurosu SP Ban), showcasing a preview version of the first episode was aired on December 24, 2007. The series is also received its satellite television premiere in Japan on Animax on April 7, 2008.[1]
Plot and overview
The series celebrates the 25th anniversary of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross TV series (1982~1983), and is chronologically subsequent to Macross 7 (1994~1996). This third TV series features Earth's latest main variable fighter, the VF-25 and a new spaceship called the Macross Frontier. Two separate manga adaptations have been running in Shōnen Ace and Comp Ace, since February 2008 and April 2008 respectively.[2]
On the Macross timeline, the story is set on the year 2059. The series features the 25th colonial fleet, dubbed the Macross Frontier, en route near the galactic center.
During a mission to an unexplored asteroid belt, a reconnaissance New U.N. Spacy (N.U.N.S.) VF-171 is destroyed by extremely powerful & fast insectoid biomechanical alien mecha (called "Vajra", バジュラ in the official site) [1], which immediately begin their attack on the rest of the fleet. Not being able to stop the new enemy threat, the N.U.N.S. colonial defense forces authorize the deployment of a civilian military provider organization called S.M.S., which utilizes the new VF-25 variable fighter to destroy the alien menace.

Saotome Alto (早乙女アルト):Yuichi Nakamura
- High school student at Mishima Academy Pilot Trainig course. Often mistaken for a girl for his long hair and fine features he is otherwise a rather normal boy. He has a somewhat aloof and standoffish personality. Born into a well known Kabuki fanily, he always earned for the skies, so he had a thorny relationship with his father, but now is trainig to become a Valkyrie pilot. He was constantly fretting about living aboard Macross Frontier, but sinnce Vajra attack he is piloting a nevest VF-25 variable fighter.
Ranka Lee (ランカ・リー):Megumi Nakajima
- Short, but lively and cheerful, although naive girl. Younger sister of SMS ace Ozma Lee. While going to a girl's high school, she is working part-time in "Nyan-Nyan" Chinese restaurant at urging of her brother. She is a huge fan of Sheryl Nome, and got a tickets to her concert from her brother as a big favor. She loves to sing since childhood and dreans to become a singer.
Sheryl Nome (シェリル・ノーム):Aya Endo
- Pop idol from Macross Galaxy fleet. Che constantly tops music charts, and it is said that it's impossible not to hear her songs if you live in this Galaxy. Naturally, her popularity is soaring high in Galaxy's sister fleet, Frontier. Due to hear beauty and singing talent she's very proud and self-assured person.
Mikhail Buran (ミハエル・ブラウン):Hiroshi Kamiya
- Alto's classmate and friendly rival. He's an excellent marksman, and his motto is to always acquire his targer, be it an enemy or a woman -- as he is a considerable ladies man.
Luca Angelloni (ルカ・アンジェローニ):Jun Fukuyama
- Alto and Mikhail's junior classmate. He's often frustrated at his seniors, who like to give him a hard time. He is a genius with computers and military electronics.
Matsura Nanase (松浦ナナセ):Houko Kuwashima
- Another Alto and Mikhail's classmate and Ranka's friend. Shy and quiet girl. She also works in "Nyan-Nyan" restaurant and supports Ranka's dream of becoming a singer.
Ozma Lee (オズマ・リー):Katsuyuki Konishi
- Top ace in SMS private special military company. Leader of Skull squadron. Former NUNS pilot, so he has a plenty of combat experience. Although laidback and careless on the outside, he knows when to be serious, and believes that the real duty of a soldier it to care for his subordinates and civilians. He is somewhat overprotective of his sister Ranka, and lies to her about his work so she wouldn't worry for him. He says to her that he has a desk job in a company's personnel department.
Cathy Glass (キャシー・グラス):Sanae Kobayashi
- NUNS General Staff second lieutenant, attached to Macross Frontier. President's daughter. A good thinker, she's got both brain and looks. After graduating from the university with honors, she joined NUNS. She is being fast-tracked into elite. a very competent officer, she sometimes lacks flexibility. On a Miss Macross contest she would be on a championship level.
Bobby Margot (ボビー・マルゴ):Kenta Miyake
- Helmsman of the SMS warship. Somewhat stern in the appearence, he is "just like a girl inside", as he often says. Was a hair stylist somewhere in the past. He is well liked by female crewmembers for his good understanding. A gay, he has a secret feeling for Ozma.
Howard Glass (ハワード・グラス):Tomomichi Nishimura
- New United Nations Government president. His administration is responsible for Macross Frontier colony fleet creation. He has to shoulder all the political decision to ensure citizens security and wellbeing.
Leon Mishima (レオン・三島):Tomokazu Sugita
- President's aide. An ever calm and composed man, he's President Glass' close associate. He is a constant source of all political trends and winds.

Radio Macross
Radio Macross is a radio program, based on Macross Frontier, which was first broadcast on Bunka Hōsō and MBS Radio from January 3, 2008[2]. It has featured Megumi Nakajima and Kenta Miyake, voice actors for the characters Ranka Lee and Boby Margot, as hosts. [4]
