AC Locomotive Group

The AC Locomotive Group is the UK's only dedicated AC electric locomotive preservation society. They currently have ten locomotives in their care. These are 81002, 82008, 83012, 84001, 85101, 86101, 86213, 86401, 89001, and 73138.
History
The group formed in 1996 at a time when many ac locomotives and multiple units had been stored or scrapped. At the time there were only six members, but as time went on the numbers increased. In 1996, Pete Waterman put his entire fleet of locomotives for sale including the sole survivors of classes 81, 82, 83 and 85. In early 1997, these locomotives were purchased by the group.
Timeline
- 1979 - 84001 goes on loan to the National Railway Museum, York.
- 1981 - 306017 is stored at Ilford.
- 1988 - The last APT-P is preserved at Crewe.
- 1991 - Peter Holt buys 81002 from British Rail.
- 1992 - Pete Waterman buys 82008, 83012 and 85101, and then 81002.
- 1992 - 89001 is preserved.
- 1994 - 84001 is claimed by the NRM.
- 1995 - 84009 is scrapped at Gwent Demolition in South Wales.
- 1996 - Waterman puts all of his railway stock up for sale.
- 1996 - The AC Locomotive Group forms.
