Lochwinnoch is a village in Renfrewshire, Scotland, located on the banks of Castle Semple Loch and the River Calder.
Transport
Lochwinnoch railway station sits, unstaffed, to the south east of the village, and is on the Ayrshire Coast Line.
History
Its name derives either from the Gaelic innis meaning 'island', or from St Winnoc, to whom a nearby chapel was dedicated. In 1795, there were nine mills located in Lochwinnoch and the village was developed mainly to accommodate the work force. It is now mostly a residential village. The former railway line has been converted into a cyclepath and is now part of the National Cycle Network[1], running from Glasgow to Gretna.
Places of interest
The loch plays host to a variety of watersports, being part of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and an RSPB bird sanctuary is nearby. There are three public houses in Lochwinnoch; the Corner Bar, the Brown Bull and the Garthland Arms. There is also one restaurant, the Junction Bistro. Lochwinnoch Golf Club (eighteen holes) is on Burnfoot Rd. The car park of the water sports centre is a well-known nocturnal dogging centre, attracting patrons from around Renfrewshire and beyond.
There are three places of worship in the village. Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, High Street, meets for worship at 10am each Sunday and Calder UFC and Lochwinnoch Parish Church, both on Church Street, meet for worship at 11.00am.
Schools
Lochwinnoch Primary School, the village's only school, is situated on Calder Street.
Village Website
Lochwinnoch has a thriving and successful village website with a web admin team who claim to encourage open and lively debate. With information about all the local groups, events calendar, webcams, photo gallery, a tangible bias toward and live local weather station data it is a valuable resource for some members of the community (particularly if you drink in The Brown Bull, or are a member of a community group). It is run on an entirely voluntary basis.
