Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport
Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico is the island's main international gateway. Domestic flights are also flown to various local points of interest, including Ponce and Vieques.
Located in the area known as Isla Verde, the airport was, for many decades, known as Isla Verde International Airport, until 1985, when then Governor Rafael Hernandez Colon decided to name it after Luis Munoz Marin, Puerto Rico's first democratically elected Governor.
The airport served as Caribbean hub to such airlines as Pan Am, Trans-Caribbeanand Eastern Airlines. It was also the hub of Puerto Rico's international airline, Prinair, from the airline's start in 1966 to 1984, when Prinair went bankrupt. From 1987 on, it became American Airlines' hub to the area.
Other airline companies flying to this airport include: United Airlines, American Trans Air, Miami Air, Iberia, Condor, Delta Airlines, Air Sunshine, Northwest Airlines, Pan Am, Lacsa, Copa, TAM, as well as a considerable amount of Cargo airlines.
At other times, the airport has been served by such mayor airlines as Mexicana,Aerolineas Argentinas, Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways and many more important air companies.
Important events have also been held there, such as the Menudo welcoming in 1981, after the group came back from touring Mexico, the Felix Trinidad welcoming in 1999, after he beat Oscar De La Hoya and the welcoming of The Pope in 1984.
