Cetrimide agar is a type of agar used for the selective isolation of the gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. [1] As the name suggests, it contains cetrimide, which is the selective agent against alternate microbial flora. [2] The cetrimide of the agar also inhances the production of pigments such as pyocyanin, which produces the characteristic blue or blue-green colour associated with Pseudomonas colonies. [3] Another pigment produced by Pseudomonas on cetrimide agar is flourescein, showing a characteristic yellow-green colour. [4]

Cetrimide agar is widely used in the examination of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and clinical specimens to test for the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. [5]
