Eight Belles (2005 – May 3, 2008) was a gray Thoroughbred racehorse owned by Fox Hill Farms. She finished second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, a race won by only three fillies in the past.
Eight Belles's dam is Away, herself a descendent of Northern Dancer, and Eight Belle's sire is Unbridled's Song. Unbridled's Song's dam is a daughter of Caro. Caro is the sire of Winning Colors, one of the three fillies to win the Kentucky Derby Mr. Prospector is in her bloodlines on both her sire and dam's sides.
She finished second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, but collapsed after the race. She suffered two broken ankles in her front legs and was immediately euthanized following the race due to the nature of the injury. Her injury was said to be very painful. The euthinization of Eight Belles was a great blow to the owners. Mike said "This registered right up there with the birth of our children." and "very few people will feel a feeling such as this. We just can't wait to get back to Baltimore."
