Doug Heffernan
Douglas Steven "Doug" Heffernan is a fictional character in the American situation comedy The King of Queens. The role is played by actor Kevin James, whose stand-up comedy provides the comedic themes and general style of the show.
The character Doug Heffernan lives in Queens, a borough of New York City. Doug Heffernan lives with his wife Carrie Heffernan (Leah Remini) and his father-in-law Arthur Spooner (Jerry Stiller).
Arthur always refers to him as "Douglas."
Doug is a proud worker; he is a delivery man and a truck driver for the fictional company, IPS. Doug's actual boss is Supervisor Patrick O'Boyle (Sam McMurray) though officially, as seen in one episode, his company boss is named Fiscer. IPS is a thinly veiled reference to United Parcel Service.
Doug and Carrie live next door to famous bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno (played by himself). Lou is most famous for his role as The Incredible Hulk
Doug's best friend is fellow IPS driver Deacon Palmer (Victor Williams), who is married to Carrie's best friend, Kelly (Merrin Dungey). His other friends include Spence Olchin (Patton Oswalt), a firefighter named Richie (Larry Romano), his cousin Danny (Gary Valentine), and a dogwalker named Holly (Nicole Sullivan). Another friend of Doug's, Ray Barone (Ray Romano, Everybody Loves Raymond), has also appeared as a guest on a few episodes of the show.
Doug's parents' names are Joe Heffernan (Dakin Matthews) and Janet Heffernan (Jenny O'Hara). Doug's sister's name is Stephanie Heffernan (Ricki Lake). Doug's cousin Danny is played by Gary Valentine, who is Kevin James' brother in real life. His cousin's father is referred to as "Uncle Stu" (who Doug likes, unlike Danny, whom he finds annoying).
Doug's favorite teams are the New York Mets, New York Jets, and New York Knicks. He is also known for irritating Carrie several times, and he has a colorful vocabulary. Doug likes to pronounce words that end in "-tion" as "shee-ohn" or "on-ion-ion". For example, "relaxation" would be "relax-a-shee-ohn," "education" would be "educa-shee-ohn," and so forth. Also, when Doug wants someone to shut up, he tells them to "Shutty."
