Chula Vista High School
32°19.65′N 117°38.09′W / 32.32750°N 117.63483°WChula Vista High School' in Chula Vista, California, was founded in 1947. It is part of the Sweetwater Union High School District. The school colors are blue and white, and the mascot is Sammy Spartan. The school's main rival is the Sweetwater High School Red Devils.
The Sweetwater Union High School District's School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA)is part of Chula Vista High School. The SCPA offers high school "majors" in dance, vocal music,Mariachi, band, orchestra, ballet folklorico, drama, theater production, and art, including drawing, sculpture, and computer art.
Sports
Fall sports offered include football, crosscountry, girl's volleyball, Water polo, girl's tennis, and field hockey. Winter sports offered include basketball, soccer, roller hockey, and wrestling. Spring sports offered include baseball, softball, track, swimming, lacrosse, and golf.
Band
The Chula Vista High School Marching and Symphonic Band is headed under the direction of Mr. Zig Kanstul. Also offered is the CVHS Jazz Ensemble which is directed by Mr. Kanstul as well. Under the tutelage of Mr. and Mrs. Kanstul, the CVHS band as a whole and the colorguard have strived to achieve numerous awards and accolades. They host the Chula Vista Band Review, an annual collaboration of bands from all over Southern California in which the bands compete in parade marches down Broadway.
Mariachi Chula Vista
Mariachi Chula Vista is the performing group made up of 16 of the most advanced students from the Mariachi Program at CVHS, taught by Mr.Mark Fogelquist (MA from UCLA in 1975 - his thesis on the son jalisciense remains a landmark work on mariachi music.)
Mariachi Chula Vista was formed at Chula Vista High School in September of 2001. Since then, Mariachi Chula Vista has performed 200 plus events every year and has earned a reputation as one of the best student mariachis in the country. The group has appeared at festivals and educational events in Albuqerque, Tucson, Santa Barbara, Las Cruces, Salt Lake City, Mesa AZ, San Diego, and Guadalajara MX. Mariachi Chula Vista won $5000 first price in SD Viejas Competition(2004), First Prize 2004 (SECOND PRIZE 2005), First 2006 at Albuqerque, and First 2006 and 2007 in San Juan Capistrano Mariachi Chula Vista is a student group that works very hard and continuously strives for excellence.
